Starters letting Giants down

08:08 AM ET 09.05 | In San Francisco, especially with Melky Cabrera out, the formula is simple, and it has to do with successful starting pitching. Here is how Giants manager Bruce Bochy framed Tuesday night's 8-6, 11-inning loss in which the Giants matched the major league record by putting 11 pitchers on the mound and equaled their franchise mark by using 25 players in all: "The starting pitchers are struggling here but the guys are battling back and that's a good sign." Nice rhetoric. But the Giants are trying to win a war, not mere skirmishes. To do that, they'll need those starting pitchers to do an about-face. In case you've forgotten, this is a club still built on its rotation. And the foundation needs some sealant.

The Giants have 26 games left and are still in first place. The only person who is pushing the panic button is you Mr. Sportswriter, because everyone already knows to make it to the playoffs you got to have good starting pitching.

Interesting note on the radio today - the Giants have thrashed the Astros, Padres, Rocks, and Cubs ... and are under .500 against everyone else. That doesn't bode well for the playoffs.

Way back when, shortly after the great Bob Gibson posted a 1.12 ERA for an entire season and I think the AL batting champ hit something like .302, the pitcher's mound was lowered. Couple that with a severely reduced strike zone and the hitter now enjoys an advantage that never used to exist. Also taken away is a pitcher's ability to pitch inside. Perhaps we shouldn't restore everything to the way it once was but certainly we need a balance of powers between pitchers and hitters.

The same is true for the Braves. Some of these teams have no chance in the playoffs, but someone has to win the division.

Not that the Braves are going to win the division, mind you.

Let's just get into the post season and let the chips fall.
Giants made it in on the last day in '10 and we all know how that turned out.

I think the traditional formula for reaching the playoffs is to beat the guys you are supposed to beat, and hold your own against the good teams. "Under 500" isn't quite holding their own but if they get their pitching on track they should be ok. Posey & Sandoval are hitting, Belt is getting on base, and if they get Pence to hit they will be a better team than they were during the first half of the season

That's a very misleading stat. Here's how the Giants have fared against possible playoff teams:
ATL: 4-3
CIN: 3-4
LAD: 7-5
PIT: 3-3
STL: 3-3
WAS: 1-5
The Nats have owned the Giants. Outside of them, the Giants are 20-18 against possible playoff teams. That tells me they have to figure out how to play the Nats, but can be competitive against any other playoff team.

Is it a coincidence that the starting pictures (Vogelsong in particular) have struggled since Melky was busted. Some say Vogelsong is just fatigued going down the stretch, or perhaps got a wake up call from Melky? I hope not.

oh paleeze! what a crock.....the Giants pitching AND hitting will come through when it matters the most.....whomever posted this tome is full of it...and definitely doesn't know anything about baseball...the Giants are a team to be feared because they play solid ball, and put forth a team effort....if they play the Nats in the playoffs they will own them...

The Giants have the best one-two punch in the league with Cain and Bumgarner. If Tiny Tim comes around down the stretch, and Vogelsong and Zito are merely average, San Fran will be right in it.
I still like the G men better than the Dodgers' overpriced collection of aging talent.

wiseup:The Giants are up by 4.5 games on Dodgers with about 28 games to play. They have one of the best staffs in the NL. and a decent bullpen. doesn't hold a candle to cincinnati's , but should hold its own. Don't know who;s crying, but better off than LA.
