08:10 AM ET 09.05 | Plans change, but, at present, it remains in place in New York. The Plan, if you haven't heard, is for the Yankees to reduce their payroll below the $189 million luxury-tax threshold by 2014. The Plan, motivated by a series of provisions in the new labor agreement, is intended to save the Yankees tens of millions. And The Plan, according to Hal Steinbrenner, the Yankees' managing general partner, is non-negotiable. ... Well, let's see the Yankees stick to that goal if they fail to reach the postseason. Let's see them go two more offseasons without spending like the George Steinbrenner Yankees. Let's see them make their old guys younger, and their young guys worthy of their considerable hype. A fine mess this could be.

2 games under 500 since the break.........
The top 5 payrolls in all of baseball 1. Yaknkees, 2. Phillies, 3. Red Sox, 4. Angels, 5. Tigers, could all be home watching the playoffs this year.

The first real test will come after the season when they try to resign Swisher.

Looks like Joe Girardi is starting to lose it, as the pressure mounts.

I do not think they try to resign him. He is part of the problem. He is a .169 hitter in the post season in over 120 at bats. One of many on the team. They picked up his $10 million option for this year, but no way do they hand him a 3 year $30+ million contract he will be looking for.
No way.

He never had it and he is part of the problem. They play like he manages. Unimaginative, uninspired and fundamentally not good at at all. I watch them everyday and the best thing they can do is remake all they can on this team. It has no future, is getting old and was always lazy. The worst base running team you will ever see. And sloooowww! They play old.

As much as I love Swisher as a player, he's nowhere near worth the money he wants. If that's all he'll take then it's time to bid adieu.

The Yankees look old right now. I hadn't seen ARod run the bases in a while. He looked like he was running in sand when he scored on a triple Monday. I remember that feeling. One day, your legs just won't move as fast as they used to. I was 30 when that happened.

His new contract wouldn't be a big issue on its own. The real problem is the other bloated deals to Arod and Tex just to name two.

not to mention Granderson and Cano need to be resigned real soon................

I'd love to hear about what all the "MLB must have a salary cap" whiners would have to say about that.

what's your source? ESPN has Texas listed as the 5th highest payroll. The Rangers have the best record in the AL.

I totally agree. Plus, they have Cano and Granderson on their plate to re-sign in 2014. Even if they let Swisher go (which I think they will) I don't see how they stay under $189 mil unless Cano or Granderson also goes. My money is on keeping Cano and letting Granderson go.

Exactly. The Cano contract they need to offer would be worth a large sum, but it would be hard to justify enormous numbers for even Granderson because of what has happened due to the ARod and Teixeira contracts.

Yep, Cano will get $22+ million a year (guessing 6-7 years) and Granderson is worth what? $15 million per for 4 years. I might be too low on Cano.
