Irish QB has a long way to go

08:14 AM ET 09.05 | It has been months since Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Rees took any meaningful snaps, something to which he has returned this week. Rees, ND's starter in 11 of 12 games last season and the final four contests of 2010, will compete with fellow junior Andrew Hendrix this week to be Plan B in the Irish home opener Saturday against Purdue (1-0). Sophomore Everett Golson retains clear No. 1 status for the 22nd-ranked Irish (1-0) after a solid debut and will get most of the practice reps. But Kelly said Rees will get the second-most. "I think both of them have to get some work," Kelly said of Rees and Hendrix. "But Tommy probably needs the most work at this time."

Normally i would hope so but have ND on my pick em. Hate pulling for a team just because i picked them to win.

I will...and if the Boilermakers pull it off, I'll bow down to your wisdom and laugh at Van, Piratey, LF, SF, etc, etc, etc.

Rees breaks the old saying about the most loved QB on a team being the backup. Most Domers I know hate the guy.

September 5, 2012  09:59 AM ET

For whatever reason ND has managed to have Purdue's "number" the last several years. I don't think that will change on Saturday (although the Boilers did put up 50+ points on a "cupcake" last weekend). The first "true" test for the Irish this season will be next week at Michigan State (nationally televised night game). If ND wins that I will start to believe...

Rees and Calabrese, the GotUrBak2, suck (and suck and suck and suck).

Kelly still has Rees in the QB picture... don't really understand why. What was is last Saturday? Was ND that good or is Navy that bad this year?

Good point, as yesterday some ND fans were ranking on Denard Robinson.

Navy was clearly overmatched on the line, so ND ran at will and stopped most of the option game at the line. They did make a couple of passes look easy, which raises questions about ND's defensive backfield this coming Saturday against a QB who can throw.

Navy's schedule is way too tough for a team that can't recruit monsters for their line. By the end of the season those kids will be really beat up. Someone at Annapolis, or in the Pentagon should give the AD at Navy a reality check in drawing up their schedule. ND will always keep playing them as long as Navy's wants to do so,due to the obligation they feel for Navy's support in keeping the school open in WWII, but the rest of their schedule should be with teams more their size and skill level.
