Maddon mocks Valentine's rant

08:11 AM ET 09.06 | Not long after Bobby Valentine -- in response to reports that he arrived late to the ballpark last week -- noted that Joe Maddon's arrival time is around 4 p.m., Maddon shot back on Twitter. [Said Valentine:] "Joe Maddon gets there every day at 4 o'clock, just for the record -- when I walked in and someone is going to write that, wouldn't you think that they'd say, 'Hey -- why is it that you just got to the ballpark? You're usually here at 2. Why are you here today at 4?'" Maddon tweeted the following on Wednesday afternoon: "Apologies to the writers for being late to today's pregame session. My pedicure appointment ran a little late." In his pregame press media availability Wednesday, Maddon showed up and told reporters, "Sorry I'm late. I just got here."

I think BV was irritated about the differential treatment he and Maddon get from the sportswriters and their response was to slant the story in a way that makes him look like a fool. Confirmation of the adage that you should never pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel or however that went.

Maybe the story should be only 17,000 fans at Tropicana last night in the heat of a close pennant race with the Yanks in town. The Rays are a good team with a solid coaching/management team. I'd like to see what they could do with a few more bucks. Then again I said that about the Twins and once they started to spend they went in the tank.

SEATTLE (AP) -- Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine insisted Wednesday he wasn't serious when he threatened to ''punch'' a radio talk-show host in the mouth.
Valentine said he made it clear he was kidding when he made the comment earlier in the day during an interview on Boston station WEEI with hosts Glenn Ordway and Michael Holley.
''Didn't I go, 'Ha, ha?''' the embattled Valentine asked before his fourth-place team played the Seattle Mariners. ''I don't think physical violence is necessary for 60-year-old people.''
