Trout losing grip on batting title, AL MVP

08:13 AM ET 09.06 | The long season may be catching up to Angels rookie Mike Trout. [Trout] has been at the top of the American League leaderboard in batting average since he accumulated enough at-bats to be eligible in late June. At times, his lead over the second-place hitter was as much as 25 or 30 points. ... Those days are gone. Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera has made a strong push to take away both Trout's batting title and possibly his status as the frontrunner to win the AL MVP. Trout was hitless in four at-bats Wednesday, dropping his average to .330 (the lowest it has been since June 18). Cabrera, meanwhile, homered in his first at-bat against the Indians Wednesday night, moving (at least temporarily) ahead of Trout.

No, he has plenty of time to manifest in his talents. It's Miguel Cabrera's time right now.

Cabrera is the best right handed hitter in the game right now.

Hamilton is back to his old self. He takes the MVP. End of story!

He's a terrific player when he's on, the only problem is he disappears for stretches -- sometimes long ones -- like he did in the middle of this season. I think because of that, he won't win the MVP. It's really a 2-an race between Cabrera and Trout right now, IMHO.

Maybe the reason that Trout is fading is that Triple A plays 144 game schedule instead of 162, and it is very hard for a rookie to win the MVP award.

It was certainly a dismal June/July but even so, he is tied for the major league lead in home runs, 2nd in rbi's, 4th in runs and batting close to .300 (.292). That's pretty impressive for really doing nothing for those months AND they have a 5 game league.

Agreed. Trout for ROY--makes great sense. Trout for MVP--hysterical hyperventilating. Nice player, may have some MVP seasons in his future, definitely helped his team this year, but not MVP numbers yet.

Cabrera seems to get better and better as the season progresses. Great run production too.

He is an incredible player to watch. My only criticism of him this year is that he has hit into WAY too many double plays. 24, in fact, which appears to lead the MLB (according to baseball-ref). But even with a gimp ankle, he has been playing incredibly lately, and his glove at third has been surprisingly much better than a lot of people expected.

QUOTE(#11):

I think Trout is slumpign because of an incident in the Angels clubhouse which traumatized him. Mike forgot someting in the clubhouse after a night game and returned long after everyone had cleared out. He entered the clubhouse and was shocked to see his mother in just her panties standing in front of Torii Hunter.

Did Torii have his trouser Trout out?

....adrian beltre should be considered for mvp...cabrera is a nic offensive machine...but is a dh...he cost the tigers defensively every game with very limited range and 3b ability...

QUOTE(#16):

Well, that and he's a defensive liability.

Not as much as you think. He makes pretty much all the routine plays, but does have some limited range. However, he has a .963 Fld% with 12 errors this year -- 4 fielding and 8 throwing (considering Fielder isn't that great of a first baseman, some of those throwing errors could have been saved by a better 1B) -- which is significantly less than the MLB leader (Pedro Alvarez, PIT w/ 22), and fewer than the AL leaders Lawrie and Betemit, who both have 13 a piece. The perception of Cabrera as a defensive liability is way over-blown.
