08:19 AM ET 09.06 | Nick Saban made things short and not very sweet Wednesday. Saban clearly was rubbed a little raw Monday by a question that in essence pertained to how much playing time his second-team quarterback might get in the home opener Saturday against Western Kentucky. He is upset about glowing reports of his Alabama football team's season-opening 41-14 victory over No. 8 Michigan swelling the heads of his younger players. So he shook a little ground in his press conference after practice. ... Earlier, more four-letter words were flying at practice than anyone heard the entire month of August. The defensive backs felt most of the wrath, much of it directly from Saban. Saban's press conference lasted less than six minutes. He ended with an apology.

Had to start watching it several years back when I was in the Navy when someone told me that I reminded them of Gibbs in the way that I carried myself. Never slapped anyone in the back of the head but I did plant plenty of shoes in rear ends.

It's all to a purpose. He probably goes into his office and laughs at all the uproar his outburst creates.

Had a boss tell me once that motivating individuals always comes from behind. A kick in the butt or a pat on the back. Both need to be applied in the correct amounts when deserved. When I asked about dangling the carrot as an incentive he told me in no uncertain terms that the carrot was also applied from behind and threatened to put it in mine.

Will file that bit of wisdom away for future use.

A coach yelling at his players is news? Boom would be a reporter's wet dream if that's the case.
