Big 12 QB jinx?

08:02 AM ET 09.07 | To be sure, the recent history of Big 12 quarterbacks isn't exactly stellar. From Jason White and Josh Heupel of Oklahoma to Vince Young and Colt McCoy of Texas, the league known for producing quarterbacks with video-game numbers in college has yet to have a big splash in the NFL. This year's crop of rookie Big 12 quarterbacks, which includes the Dolphins' Ryan Tannehill, indeed has something to prove. ... The offense-oriented conference prompted Dolphins linebacker Kevin Burnett, a proud SEC alum, to say "they don't play real football in that conference" because of the perceived lack of defense. Validation is the limited amount of success the Big 12's record-setting quarterbacks have carried to the next level.

Maybe the experts just over value these guys. Ryan Tannehill going No. 8 is a perfect case of that.

There is a lot less parity in college, even less than in the NFL. So, it's not hard for a few schools to really dominate a conference. The QBs from those schools rack up great numbers, but they don't play against top talent every week.
You've got to look deeper than the stats. You need to look at the stats about the stats.

As is Young going 3rd and Bradford going 1st.

hard to evaluate Bradford because of injury and no team around him, but VY...yes!

I agree to an extent, let's just hope that he doesn't end up like Carr from the Texans and fall off due to his confidence being destroyed from the lack of protection.. I think Fisher will fix those holes though with all the Picks they stole from the Redskins in the RGIII trade..

It is the same for USC...It's hard to tell what a QB has when he has talent around him that far above and beyond what he is playing all but a few games.
Also the style of QB that that usually wins championships in the NCAA isn't usually the same as the style that succeeds in the NFL. Just look at players with an NCAA and NFL ring. You have Montana who wasn't a high pick, Aikman has an NCAA championship but he was hurt mid season and didn't actually win one. Other than that you have what Stabler and Namath? Remember when VY vs Leinart was a big ticket in the championship?
Basically, you don't have to be accurate or have a high football IQ to succeed in the NCAA where those are the 2 biggest things in the NFL for a QB.

The article fail to mention that these player came out of big time programs with winning records and most with national honors. Thus when the draft comes along the worst picks first and if you are a good QB on a bad team most of the time you are running for your life or getting beat up like a punching bag.

Bottom line , success in college does not automatically equate to success in the NFL.

The knock against a lot of the Big 12 QBs is that they are "system quarterbacks" who are in an offense that is designed to produce huge passing stats. The problem with going to the NFL is that pro teams don't play the same system.

Unfortunately because these guys do get over valued they are being drafted higher than they should and end up on really bad teams. Gabbert - Jacksonville. McCoy - Cleveland. Bradford - Rams. Tannehill - Miami. And I don't know why Jason White is even mentioned since he was not drafted and had a cup of coffee with Tennessee but retired because of leg problems. Anyway, the second coming of Joe Montana wouldn't be able to help any of those 4 teams.

Burnett went to UT. Aside from P.Manning, can anyone name another QB from that school? Hint: The second best QB from that school was a guy so bad he was replaced by Guy Frerotte.

Remember David Klinger from U of Houston, threw for abunch of yards in his college career but couldn't do it in the NFL, for 1. the game is much quicker and 2. I don't think the BIG 12 QB's are as NFL seasoned as some of the other conferences.

Best QB from Univ. of Florida. It might just be Tebow, a guy who can't throw a lick. And name a successful QB from Alabama since Namath? At least LSU had a QBH who went #1 a few years back - he's doing well in the NFL, right?
Gee, I guess, there's an SEC jinx, too?
