Two-game preseason on the horizon

08:05 AM ET 09.07 | Read between the lines of Roger Goodell's comments at the Bloomberg Sports Business Summit on Thursday and you might believe the NFL is ready to cut the preseason in half. The league is considering formats that would have each team to play two preseason games and then 16 or 18 regular-season contests. "The four preseason games are an issue for us," Goodell said. "One, you have a question whether we really need it to put on the best quality product. Two, you have an issue of how our fans are reacting to it, and they're not reacting positively. It's not the kind of standard that the NFL is used to producing." The issue of a shorter preseason came up during labor negotiations last year.

I think it's fine the way it is, but the owners are obviously extra greedy and they'll get their extra games for the season...

Did Dallas have a parade yesterday?

no...we were too surprised to get that going.

They used to treat them like real games, to get their regulars ready. Now, they are afraid somebody is going to get hurt, so the regulars see little action and the games are only used to evaluate players and decide who to keep.

It's also about attendance. Season ticket holders hate paying for these meaningless, boring practice sessions as a condition for getting their seats for the real games.

And mostly, it's about going to an 18-game season without starting before Labor Day or going too deep into February.

Then they better increase the roster size. These guys are hobbling enough as it is after the end of the regular season.

Absolutely. And change the IR rules to let a guy come back after, say, 8 weeks off. And more players means they need to raise the cap.

But face it, we are one year into the new CBA. It's a 10-year deal. If the league wants an 18-game season, they've got 9 years to go.

So has the quarterback situation for the Jets, but that doesn't stop them from bringing it up 3 times a week.
