A's rattled by McCarthy's condition

08:14 AM ET 09.07 | Though the A's flew to Seattle Thursday for what might be their most important series of the season, their minds were elsewhere. Their teammate, pitcher Brandon McCarthy, lay in a hospital bed recovering from surgery for an epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and skull fracture caused by a line drive that struck him in the head while he was pitching a day earlier. "It was a quiet flight," A's reliever Sean Doolittle said. "I think a lot of guys were thinking about him. We're hoping that the more news we get, it's going to continue to be good news. As serious as we all thought it was, I think we all kind of underestimated how serious it was." ... The purpose of the surgery was to relieve pressure on the brain.

This is a afterthought, but since they are making base coaches wear helmets maybe they need to think about pitchers wearing them to.

I hope that he's ok and that he won't be afraid to come back and continue to play MLB. A shot like that can effect a guy beyond the physical.

The M's Franklin Gutierrez was hit in the head on a pickoff attempt. Wound up with a concussion and missed a couple of months. He got back a couple of weeks ago but he still flinches anytime the ball gets near his head. It takes time to recover physically, and more time to recover psychologically. I wish McCarthy the best.

McCARTHY its a a great person and a great player, bad luck was in his way i do feel for him and the A's who were in good playing run for the wildcard, but i do hope he gets well not that the team would use him to play in the final games of the season but he should be ready to pitch for the next season, prayers and good thoughts gone to him and all the affected people!!!

My thoughts and prayers are with the McCarthy's! But seriously, who ever replaced BoMel's photo with a previous boneheaded manager (who shall remain nameless) should be FIRED ASAP! THANK YOU!

Weird, before I even knew about this I had been thinking about when Billy Swift, then of the Mariners, had been hit in the head so hard that the ball bounced off his head and I think made it into the stands in foul ground. In his case it seemed to help, as he went on to win 20 for the Giants later.
