08:30 AM ET 09.07 | Though not necessarily what the hockey fan wants to hear, there may be more meat to the owners' new CBA quest than meets the eye. I got this text from a very well-connected hockey source Tuesday night: "In spending time around the players the last month, I think they are very unified and more misinformed than ever. They don't get it. I know for a fact there are teams that would lose much less money by not playing than if they played. If you are an owner, why would you agree to lose more money when this is your one chance to reset the equation? The players are being walked right down the gangplank and don't see it coming." Well, here we go again.

What does it say about the management of the league and teams that some owners would lose less money if they shut down their product?

Makes me think of the NFL, who gave 30 million for study of the brain, commendable of course, but won't give the refs 1 million more.

Of course there are alot of teams that would be better off no playing the season, that is the whole flaw of the NHL for the past 15 years. I have been saying for years, and since I came to this forum many have agreed that there are too many teams in the NHL and expansion was essentially a failure overall.

Why Bettman likes to tout that the League Revenue are in the billions compared to when he took over, that would have happened with any commissioner simply because the rise of Cable TV in the past 15-20 years. Even moron Bud Selig just negotiated a huge new TV deal with ESPN/FOX that is worth billions for the next 7 years to televise the playoffs. If Selig or Bettman were commissioners in the 1970's or 80's there is no way they would be able to grow the game they are now simply because there was only ESPN back then and very few regional cable networks, so most sporting events were on Free TV.

Until the NHL contracts to atleast 24 teams (I say they goto 20 teams), we will have this same problem the next time a new CBA comes up as you will hear the same franchises having the same financial problems for the same reasons they couldn't make money since they were expanded in the 1990's.

Howard John is right!

Just caught an article in Arizona Republic about the Coyotes hosting an open house/ticket sale. Is this normal for teams to do? I've never read about this in Philadelphia or NJ, and the only publicized ticket sale I can recall (in NHL circles anyway) is last year in Atlanta. Something just strikes me odd about everything going on and the correlation between lockout and the Phoenix situation.

The only open house/ticket sale I went to was back in the 90's for the Phantoms.

"The fans are being walked right down the gang plank"...and we can see it coming.... fan survival rate, if there is a lock out, will be hard to overcome.....teams better give fans there monies worth if they want them to come back in full force.......
