08:28 AM ET 09.08 | A three-person appeals panel on Friday struck down the tough suspensions handed out by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to four current or former Saints players for the roles the league said they played in the team's bounty program, clearing the way for their participation in this weekend's season-opening games. While the players' immediate reaction made the ruling seem like a knockout blow to the NFL's allegations - suspended Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma tweeted: "Victory is mine!!!!" - the league made clear it was more of a technical knockout as the panel referred the matter back to Goodell and didn't make any determination on the accuracy of the allegations. The Times-Picayune obtained a memo sent by NFL executive vice president Jeffrey Pash to all team chief executives and club presidents re-affirming the league's stance on its findings for the Saints' alleged bounty scandal. the NFL stood firm with its findings and a decision to re-suspend the four players may come quickly.

I am so sick of Goodell. You can't watch anything about football without hearing about that idiot. Every sports talk show, pregame show, every magazine, news paper, and blog...Goodell Goodell Goodell. Some one just shoot the fool already.

September 8, 2012  09:22 AM ET

"The panel explained that Goodell can rule on conduct issues" it was the cap thing he over stepped on.

There ya go. That is that, he can suspend them as long as he wants. And he will. Vilma tweets to soon methinks.

Not4Nutten But, I think all players should be asked if they Partisipated, If their answer is Proven to be dishonest, then suspend them, if they admit guilt fine them $$$$$.

Be that as it may, I like what he's doing with this situation.

Me too. He's setting the league up well for the future if/when there are more concussion injury lawsuits. Goodell can say that he made efforts to curb the type of play that causes those injuries, and went as far as trying to penalize players and teams for certain actions that contributed to those injuries, only to have the NFLPA and the players take him to court. The NFLPA can't have it both ways... they can't say players are due compensation for injuries, and then complain about "unjust" suspensions for bounty programs that contribute to those injuries.

If Goodell was holding any information back for any reason, the time might be now to play those cards.

Vilma is one dumba##. Not smart to tweet at this point what he tweeted. Some people should never be allowed to be near any device that can "tweet."

His cards were never questioned. He has a full house. He can suspend them again and he will.

" The panel explained that Goodell can rule on conduct issues, while a system arbitrator is supposed to rule on salary cap issues."

Very good point. The same rule applies to the 13 to 35 year old age group in general. I like what comedian Craig Ferguson has to say about social networking. He said that he always thought about three questions before he said anything remotely sensitive: Does this need to be said? Does this need to be said by me? Does this need to be said by me now?

If people would stop and consider those three important questions before getting on Facebook or Twitter, things would go much more smoothly.

+1,000

He must re-suspend them or lose all credibility, then the lawsuits will go on and on until the players who informed are exposed; then they will face retribution, this mess will drag on for years.

Every team has one dumba## that stands out from the rest. some teams have two or more. I think each team should nominate one player, have fans ( and law enforcement/judges/team psychiatrist ) vote for the league award each year.

Call Fletcher Christian if there's a mutiny.

Roddy White gets the nod for the Falcons, based on his Twitter observations on Penn State and Joe Paterno.
