09:07 AM ET 09.08 | Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli has his way of conducting business, and the fact there???s a looming NHL lockout isn???t stopping him from continuing doing just that. A day after inking first-round draft pick Malcolm Subban, Chiarelli locked up his All-World imp, Brad Marchand, to a four-year contract extension that will pay him $4.5 million annually, starting in 2013-14. Marchand, who would have been a restricted free agent next summer, has one more year on his existing contract that will pay him $3 million. With the Marchand signing, Chiarelli is following his pattern of locking up core players before they get to free agency and the season begins. But Chiarelli, who may have more signings before the expiration of the CBA on Sept. 15, conceded that he???s not making deals in a vacuum.

Your boy certainly knows all about hate. That's what he gets paid for.

Nice signing, but lets hope he loses the diving routine he started late last season. That doesn't play well in Boston.

So, if Marchand warrants 4.5M per year, how does that bode for Tyler Seguin?

Don't think Peter will pay him more than Bergeron ..

2011- Marchand, 28 goals, 27 assists, +31. Good penalty killer and devoted to excellence in agitation.

2011- Seguin, 29 goals, 38 assists, +30. Great speed, budding PP quarterback.

At this point I don't see where Seguin has a huge advantage.

I'd be happy to see that kind of production from Marchand year in and year out. With Seguin, I would expect more because of his draft status and buildup.
