09:32 AM ET 09.09 | After holding his comments all season, Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg reacted angrily to the Nationals' decision to shut him down today, saying he feels fine physically and he wants to keep pitching. "I don't know if I'm ever going to accept it, to be honest," Strasburg said. "It's something that I'm not happy about at all. That's not why I play the game. I play the game to be a good teammate and win. You don't grow up dreaming out playing in the big leagues to get shut down when the games start to matter. It's going to be a tough one to swallow. "All I can do is be the best teammate possible for these guys. I think everybody overlooks all the great contributions that we've had this year. I know they're going to keep going that way, and I'm going to do everything in my power to support them."

It just seems to me that the Nats could have handled this differently... Like maybe skip a start once a month since April to give plenty of leeway going into September.

Look at how the Braves handled Medlen and compare that to how the Nats handled Strasburg. Both are coming of Tommy John surgeries, both are on innings limits; but Medlen will be available for the playoffs while Strasburg watches. Seems like the Braves thought things through a little better.

In their wildest imagination I don't think The Nats saw themselves contending this year.

What was there for them to know? The playoffs start every October. If you thought there was a chance you'd be in them, you'd want him available. If you didn't think there was a chance you'd be in them, what do lose by resting him more early?

Even if they thought they were a wildcard contender (and they should have with the additional WC this season), they should have played this differently. This whole sideshow is the result of a failure of management to think ahead.

You didn't see the stories in April. I bet there were plenty of critics in the Atlanta front office.
