Analyst predicts Penn State, Pitt recruiting demise

11:58 AM ET 09.09 | Mike Farrell is predicting a disastrous demise for the Pitt and Penn State football programs, and that Pennsylvania's talent will be raided as a result. The Rivals.com national recruiting analyst says, between the two schools, the state's top prospects might stay home this year but not in the next few classes. "The Big Ten, Big East, ACC and SEC teams will start to look to Pa.," Farrell said, "and they'll be licking their chops." What's worse is that Farrell believes the wounds were self-inflicted, that two proud programs are suffering for their own sins. "There were two critical mistakes that brought us to where we are today," Farrell said. "The first was the cover-up of the child sex abuse at Penn State. That has destroyed that program. And firing Dave Wannstedt has destroyed the Pitt program. You look at the comedy of errors since, with the hirings they made. This didn't have to happen at either place." Neither Penn State's Bill O'Brien nor Pitt's Paul Chryst deserves blame for the mess he inherited. Instead, look at their athletic directors.

Regarding Penn St, file that under "Duh".
Regarding Pitt-- were they supposed to keep Wannstedt for all eternity? I'm fairly sure the biggest positive that he can list on his coaching resume is "Mustache is vaguely Ditka-ish".

Not so sure about this. But for a choking kicker, Penn State wins that game yesterday. Like him or hate him, this O'Brien guy continues to impress, so I wouldn't sell him short. He's got his work cut out for him trying to recruit to PSU, but if anybody can, it looks like he's the guy. As far as Pitt is concerned, firing Wannstedt isn't going to mess that program up more than not finding a competent coach. In short, this one guy's opinion who happens to be "National Recruiting Analyst for Rivals." Oh wow. And I never liked him on M.A.S.H. anyway.

WVU will be picking up more recruits from Pennsylvania than any other school; we'll be getting the top players; the kids will be playing close to home in the 2nd strongest football conference for what I hope is a perennial top 10 program

How about Temple...they left out Temple!

I love seeing Penn St. lose, but they really weren't ever a good football team. The only reason people cared about them before was because they had a 100 year old coach that we speculated would retire every season. Now they're known as the pedophile school on probation for life. Neither one of those tags has anything to do with football, because their team hasn't won anything in the last 10 years anyway. They have exactly 1 BCS bowl win, and it came against the other 100 year old coach of a nothing school.

Yesterday, for the first time, I actually felt bad for someone on the Penn St. football team. That poor kicker was given chance after chance at redemption and blew it each time. After his final miss I thought about it, and I would like a serious answer from any pedophile st. fan, Trixie I'm talking to you-- why is that guy a kicker?

Thank you and god bless.

Wannstedt did take them bowling. Pitt may have been right to fire him, but they should have had everything lined up beforehand, as opposed to the fire him and let whatever happens happen approach they ended up taking.

The writer is correct on his two main points:
PA is now an open state for recruiting.
You cannot develop a strong football program without a good AD.

A Brokeback Mountaineer!! Welcome to the Big XII and to FanNation.

.. Don't mind the trash talk. It's just what conference rivals do, and is intended to be more or less good natured fun (College Station "animal husbandry majors" excepted).

Still lookin' for a term referring to Aggholes' amorous pursuit of sheep that modstalker will allow. "Sheep molesters" seems to get it up in arms these days. Bless its heart.

Who gives a *** what a Rivals recruiting analyst says? This is absolutely laughable! Rivals exists to sell subscriptions, nothing more.

And shame on the Pittsburgh Tribume for quoting another journalist and making a story out of it. Real journalism is dead.

Just how hard is it to predict that some PA Div 1 (FBS) level talent will have to leave the state when PSU is limited in scholarships over the next 4 years ---- DUH!!!

They do love the sheep in WV so you can make all the sheep comment about WVU.
