08:03 AM ET 09.10 | David Akers entered the record books Sunday with his historic 63-yard field goal that matched a league record shared by three others. "It was kind of one of those miracles," said the 37-year-old Akers, whose successful field goal gave the 49ers a 16-7 lead over the Green Bay Packers. "I didn't think I hit it great enough." ... After two Alex Smith incomplete passes, the 49ers set up for Akers' successful try as holder Andy Lee took a clean snap. Asked what Akers' range is, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh quipped: "Well, it was 63 yards, today." Harbaugh then noted Akers made a 60-yard attempt in pregame warm-ups to instill further faith in the 63-yard try. "With David Akers, talk about the greatest kicker in the history of our game," Harbaugh said. "The odds were in our favor."

I have to admit, that was one of the most interesting plays of the day. For those who missed it, the ball hit the crossbar and bounced over.

Akers' expression was priceless.

It was. And, for the record, Janikowski and Elam were both helped by kicking their 63 yarders in Denver. Dempsey's kick was a miracle.

His face looked like he'd just been named the winner on American Idol. But I was genuinely happy for the guy.

I think it was more than just an "any given Sunday" game. RG-III and the Skins made a statement. That game wasn't as close as the score.

They sure looked good. Almost 2-1 advantage in time of possession.

Forget the kicker. What Harbaugh has done with Alex Smith is nothing short of amazing.

It's nice to see a happy story on here for a change. Good for him.

Not to diss a guy with a club foot but Tom had a couple inch steel plate at the front of his shoe

Damn right people. My 49ers shut A-Rod and the gang DOWN! Kind of a shame for me a little because I had to start Rodgers this week.

RGIII could be the real deal if he can make us forget Kyle Shanahan is doing the play-calling.

yeah...drove me nuts to get up by 2 or 3 scores only to have them revert to prevent nothing D and allow Brees 2 TDs in under a minute....K. Shanahan needs to learn to play until the game is OVER, not just until you are up by more than 10 in the first half before trying to run out the clock...
