Phillies consider moving Utley (to third)

08:15 AM ET 09.10 | The veteran Phillies are on the verge of becoming the old Phillies, and there isn't a whole lot Ruben Amaro Jr. can do to change that. Amaro has said several times that he intends to use free agency as a tool to improve the roster, and you don't need a GM degree from Doubleday University to identify the Phillies' greatest needs. You might need one, however, to figure out the best way of improving the situation at third base and the outfield. When Amaro looks at the potential free-agent third basemen, he is rightfully unimpressed. That is a big reason why he is so intrigued by the prospect of Chase Utley's moving to third base. It's a move that would give the Phillies far more extra-base power at the position than they have had this season.

David Wright plays for the Mets. This article is talking about the Phillies. I'm not sure what your point is.

I see. That's definitely a possibility. Where would A-Rod play if he went to the Yanks? I think the Dodgers may try to grab him, to be honest.

Last I checked, Utley hasn't played a full season in 3 years...

So the Phillies will be in the market for a 2B & 3B at some point in the near future.

Utley is coming off a knee injury, I think. Would moving to 3rd put less strain on the knee? 3rd is typically a one-step-and-dive, or else run straight in towards home to field the bunt/slow roller. Then they move Polanco to 2nd?

Unless they have a 2nd base prospect to bring up, or unless 3rd base is really much better for his knee, moving Utley to 3rd doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

wiseup: When I first heard of the move of Utley to 3rd base The question was would utley have the arm to play effectively. I assume that means Frandson will move to 2nd base. Actually with all of utley's experience he could always stay with phillie as an assistant trainer.

Do it!

He should have traded Cliff Lee to the Dodgers when he had the chance.
