D'backs draw ire for hard slides

08:15 AM ET 09.10 | The Diamondbacks may have made a habit of sliding hard into second base to break up double plays. [But] manager Kirk Gibson says his team is no different than any other in that regard, adding that there is never an intent to injure. "It's just part of the game," Gibson said. "Everyone goes in hard. You're trying to effect a throw, trying not to let them have a clean path to come over the bag and throw it. That's always the risk if you stand in there." Last month, Paul Goldschmidt went hard into second baseman Jerry Hairston Jr. and angered the Dodgers. ... "We're not going down there trying to hurt anybody," Gibson said. "We're going down there to try to minimize the amount of outs you get on any given play."

Baseball has all but eliminated the brush back or knock down pitch and now teams are complaining about players sliding to hard into bases. What is next?

astros still thinking about the future,,, can they achieve any goals by the way???

Maybe you haven't noticed but free agency has changed baseball forever, brush back pitches hard sliding can cost a play millions, what once was, isn't anymore!

If as a fielder you think the sliding guy is out of line, you don't have your manager complain to the press. You wait for the opportunity to low-ball a baserunner. If you have a good arm it really maintains order quite well.

Maybe they should have two bases, like in T-ball.......

Gibby has turned that team around. Now the front office needs to complete the turnaround by trading Justin Upton for players and prospects.

I think the Red Sox would be a willing trade partner there.

wiseup: Hard slides into second base is fine . however I have seen players start their slide almost at the base and slide several feet beyond the base. Sometimes I have seen their slide to one side or the other and no way can they even touch the base. by rule you have to slide within touching distant from base. The idea is to upset the infielder to prevent the throw to first base. If a baserunner goes after the infielder there is a solution. As a SS or 2nd baseman once you make the throw to first you jump to avoid baserunner and then come down and fall on top of baserunner, making sure your elbows protect your fall. If you continue to do this when the runner comes after you. and you continue to fall on runner they might get the message. Again its just hard nose baseball

Wiseup: if after falling on the runner with your elbows and glove in his face, I can see the runner come up p---ssed off. But hey wasn't that the intent of the runner to upset the infielder at 2nd base? Whats the gripe?

wiseup: about the time an infielder falls on a runner and the runner gets injured, then someone will complain about that. If the infielder is in front of the base makig the play is one thing. but when the infieder is behind the base and gets toppled, that is when you make sure the runner breaks your fall.
