Tar Heels land top-10 recruit

Posted: Monday January 14, 2008 05:51AM ET

North Carolina's blitz of underclass commitments continued Sunday when St. Patrick (N.J.) junior guard Dexter Strickland chose the Tar Heels. Strickland, who's 6-foot-3, could play point guard and wing at North Carolina, according to his AAU coach, Lamont Halsey of Team New Jersey. Scout.com rates Strickland as the No. 10 player in the nation in his class.

Surprise!!! Why wouldn't anyone want to go to NC. They have one of the best programs, and one of, if not the best coach. Roy William wants a certain type of person to be a player on his teams. To be recruited by him is a tribute to the kid's CHARACTER. If you take a look at Roy Williams teams, from the time he was at Kansas to present, he looks for a certain type of person, before he looks at their basketball skills.

Parents have to feel good about their kids being chosen to play at UNC, not because of the tradition, but because the life lessons they will get while they are there.

golffan I agree; although I am not a UN fan, it is definitely a class program with a top notch coach.

UNC just reloads.

and the rich get richer.

you all have it right. roy williams is the biggest reason why this program will never be out of the top 25 for however long he stays. in this time of parody in the ncaa, we have in chapel hill what everyone wants. that is why it is called "blue heaven".

golffan811 said it best. even the parents feel good about their kids coming here. just remember jameson curry. nc player of the year, busted for weed, unc says "we dont want you".

this is phenomenal....Roy has now landed 5 recruits that are either 4 or 5 stars for the classes of 2009 and 2010 in the past two weeks. UNC will win multiple national championships in the next 5 or 6 years....guaranteed

This is a great pick up!!

I see why FORBES labled Carolina Basketball as the country's most valuable college basketball team. Need I say more?

Not if most of them are one and done.

Didn't Duke have a similiar recruiting year two years ago? How has that panned out? Getting blue chippers doensn't guarentee anything.

Those guys are maturing big time nolesdabomb. However, I have more promise for the 3 freshmen Duke got this year.

Coach K is the greatest coach in college basketball, although even I will admit Roy Williams is a damn good one too.

NC and Duke will both be pretty young this year and next. It will be a hell of a showdown for years to come.

I agree Wallace that both teams are good and should battle for the ACC title this year. However, next year's team will be determined by who stays and who decides to test the waters. That's the nature of the beast that is colleges sports.

This is a good pickup for Carolina. Strickland really can play.

According to his AAU coach? Where's his high school coach? Have AAU coaches supplanted high school coaches in terms of familiarity with high school players?

Report Offensive Comment

Blue Heaven is in Westwood, CA.

JR Giddens and Lester Earl thank golf guy for the Roy/character compliments. And Life lessons? The guy paid his graduating players at KU.

I bet Roy enjoyed a coke and a good cry upon learning the news of this commit. Then he got dizzy and had to lay down.

Actually they have. AAU is where most of the recruiters hang out nowadays because they can't possibly get to watch every high school senior and Most of the good ones play AAU year round (excluding the actual season)

it was only a matter of time - like golffan811 says parents would always want their kids to go to unc and that unc only accepts a certain caliber person before player. Still at 17/18 years old these kids base their decision alot upon what there parents advice is, and they are comfortable with the program at unc. anyway - unc plays tonight at GT GET PUMPED
