Jays should make Sox pay for Farrell

08:16 AM ET 09.11 | On the surface, John Farrell, currently in Toronto, is a clear fit it Boston, but things may not be that easy. The Toronto Blue Jays should part with [Farrell] only if they can do two things: One, hire a comparable replacement. Two, make the Boston Red Sox pay dearly. Otherwise, there can be no deal. ... If Farrell wants to leave, and if the Jays believe that first base coach Torey Lovullo or someone else can be just as effective a manager, then Toronto should at least listen -- and make the Red Sox beg, if only for fun. I would start by again asking for right-hander Clay Buchholz, who was the player the Jays wanted for Farrell last offseason. Ridiculous? Perhaps. But the Jays aren't the ones who are desperate here; the Red Sox are.

For the life of me, I still don't see the big attraction to John Farrell. He hasn't exactly lit it up with the Jays. If your looking for someone the players will respect, then hire Brad Mills. He's available and will cost you nothing.

Concidering his record against the Red Sox lately I have no idea why he'd want to leave the Jay's. I still think this is a pipe dream because the media can't come up with better candidates.

I don't think Brad Mills is the answer either. I think they need to go completely outside the organization.

Farrell is a media driven fantasy pick.

I agree, but if they want someone the players are use to, I just think Mills would be a better choice than giving up compensation for Farrell.

I would look at Triple A managers across the bigs not Pawtucket. Ryan Sandberg comes to mind.

The Jays won't give him up for nothing - they hold all of the cards here. Farrell has said all of the right things and the Sox are desperate!

What funny weed are those guys at Fox Sports smoking?
The Red Sox are unlikely to give up much for Farrell, perhaps a minor leaguer or two and not the most highly ranked. They are focused on building their talent pool, not giving it away.
If Farrell wants to leave the Jays then their ownership has to be realistic about having a lame duck manager next season; how much fun is that for the team? So they can let him go, maybe get a couple of minor league picks, and move on the future with a manager who is committed for the longer term.
The Sox can also look elsewhere; as another poster said above, this Farrell excitement appears to be primarily media-driven.

I have no idea what the Red Sox are thinking about a new manager, but no, the Blue Jays will not just give Farrell away to anybody. The Red Sox wanted a lot for their GM from the Cubs, it is only natural.

I do know this much, the Red Sox need to hire a manager before they hit the free agent market. Those high price players are going to want to know who that guy is.

.....the inside whisper is that roger clemens is in discussion with both the red sox and the astros to become a player-manager for them.....could turn into a bidding war for his services....

no, but Mike Maddux would be a good choice.

Who is Ryan Sandberg?

Sandberg is with the Phillies. He may be taking over for Manuel in a year or two, plus he's smart enough to stay away fro the Boston Trainwreck. So that ain't happening.
