08:14 AM ET 09.11 | According to Astros owner Jim Crane, the search is on for a new manager, beginning with a list of six to eight candidates. "We've got a pretty extensive list. We've got a bunch of people coming in, so we're working pretty hard right now. They're all very good candidates. We'll probably trim it to two to three. It started today." Crane said candidates will meet with him, general manager Jeff Luhnow, team president George Postolos and former Astros player Craig Biggio. ... He said experience as a major league manager "is a plus, but when you look at the ledger, there are a bunch of things that are pluses. It's not a must-have." Also Monday, Crane said he has not ruled out the possibility that Roger Clemens could pitch with the Astros this season.

This franchise is run more like an independent league team than a major league team.

We have seen several former catchers become good managers, so Biggio might be a good choice.

A minor league coach who is good at developing talent might be better, though. Their team next year will be pretty much minor-leagures anyway, and the coach will need to be good with youngsters, patient, and good at discerning who is getting better, and who is just marking time. Not a job for everyone, and a former all-star may not have the patience or the ability to recognize shades of mediocrity.

I would think MLB office would nix that. Besides Houston has enough poblems to solve . they don't need another one. besides another manager might be available. Clint Hurdle managerial life in Pittsburg depends on whether or not pittsburg ends up with a winning season . After challenging the Reds for first place in May and June. Since then they have spiraled down to only 3 games over .500. Since all-star game mccuthen has slumped at the plate , his average has lost over 35 points. James McDonald has not been the same sinse ealier in year. Corria has been back and forth from rotation to bullpen. A side from A.J. Burnett, Pittsburghas not had a dependable starter since All-star game.

Wiseup: I was talking about Roidger Clemens , that Mlb Office would nix. Who ever takes the managers job at houston has to be an exerienced manager that would be patient. But one who would let it be known that if you want to make team you will work ,keep mouth shut and listen..There will be a lot of competion for roster spots next spring..
