Philadelphia's 'manager-in-waiting'

Don't look now ...but Phillies are only 4 games back in the wild card.....they pull this off Manuel ain't going anywhere....

If I was Sandberg, I wouldn't just sit around and wait for Charlie to retire. He should look at any decent job opening he can find. Seems like Charlie is gonna ride this team until Utley, Halliday, Lee ,Rollins and Howard have nothing left in the tank.

Not4Nutten but, With all the issues this team had, he's done an outstanding job keeping them this close!!

It is this type of "Manager in Waiting" that saw him get passed over in Chicago too. Waiting for Manuel to kindly move out of his way will also end in disappointment. This can't miss prospect sure gets missed a lot, while a guy like Robin Ventura gets a tap on the shoulder out of nowhere and lands a first place team.

Ventura was a great fit for the White Sox. So I've got no problem with them overlooking Sandberg. How about instead we second guess a bad move....like Boston's ownership thinking that Bobby Valentine was the best fit for their ball club. Boston could get smart in a hurry if they gave Sandberg a try.

The better give Ryno a job in the majors before some other team gives him chance. He's gotta be sick of the minors by now.

Manuel has one more year, and then that's it. Unfortunately, that means Ryno may inherit a team full of over-aged has-beens and bloated contracts. It does not bode well for him. However, it's still a better scenario than Boston right now.

not really, Boston got rid of most of thier bloated contracts. at least they can start fresh with money to spend.

It seems that once you have been fired from a big-league managing job, you can keep on being recycled by other teams. It's getting that first job that is the hard part. So as bad as the Boston situation appears to be, if they offer him the job he should take it.

they're pretty hot tight now....Cards,Pirates and Dodgers are playing like they don't want it...ya never know...4 games isn't impossible...

I don't disagree with you point, but Boston is in the process of reloading/rebuilding after dumping those contracts. There's still the Big Papi issue, the lack of a pitching staff and the question of outfield contributions that hang. If I weren't so adamantly against rookie managers taking, I'd say Detroit would be a good destination for him if Leyland leaves. But after the way the Tigers scheissed on Trammell, I wouldn't expect Ryno to bite on that.

He's like the Patrick Ewing of Baseball.

BTW: Is Charlie really only 68? Looks a lot older than that :-)
