Flame-throwing Chapman shut down

Best move.........Reds basically have clinched give him a rest for the playoffs, Braxton will fill in with no problems.

This is the dead arm time of year, it only gets worse in Oct-Nov!!

I agree. This is a no-brainer.

wiseup: Watch the game monday night , the 14 inning game with pittsburg. Chapman came in in the 9th ining. he got the first hitter to pop out . then walked one gave up a base hit , then walked the next, he was then taken out but the next pitcher got the next guy to ground out to end the ining with no runs scoring. Chapman topped out with a 97mph fastball most of the pitches he through was a pedestrian 93 to 95 mph fastball. Chapman also blew a save and lost the game Sunday against Houston giving up a 3run HR that gave Houston the win.

Tuesday night's game with Pittsburg Broxton came in to pitch the ninth ining and got the save. That was another reason the Reds got Broxton, to set up in the eigth inng and as a backup for Chapman. his 35 saves came after the end of May . He took over the closer role after Marshall was having trouble successfully closing games. Before his loss sunday against Houston he had saved 27 games in a row since the end of inter league play.With about 4 or 5 games rest he should be back in triple digits with his fast ball.

Chapman has not hit the 100mph mark in his last 3 outings, when all year his fastball was in the 98-103 mph range. A weeks rest and he will be fine but look for the Reds to use Broxton more in the last few weeks of the season to get Chapman as much rest as possible but still give him work to keep him sharp for the playoffs.

And as far as the homerun....well as they say "A blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then"

I think this answers the question of Chapman being a starter. No way he holds up for a full season throwing 3,200 pitches. A closer he is.

Disagree - If they really want him to be a starter (which i would not at this point) they should help him develop a third pitch and focus less of throwing 98-103. There is a reason starters, even hard throwers average in the 94 range

Some sports doctor was claiming that pitch counts and Innings Pitched should be regarded as guidelines but that the real issue is fatigue. If your arm is tired, and you continue to throw, that is when injuries occur. If his shoulder is tired, he needs to rest it until it isn't tired any longer.

wiseup: Reds are saying Chapman just has arm fatigue, no issue with shoulder. With 5 to 7days off and they will go from there. I see Chapman back but rest of season sharing closing duty with Broxton rest of season. this way Chapman gets to stay sharp but get some rest also. Big advantage being 101/2 games up with 19 games to play.

uh oh.... better shut him down now while it's just fatigue...

yep thats right ....... the past is the past let it go...........Reds have the best Bullpen in Baseball they will be fine.......the same was said when Votto went down and they would not be able to hold off the Pirates or Cards you see what they did .......they where fine without Votto......and they will be fine without Chappy.

Seems like the safe bet.

The Reds bullpen is quite scary with Chapman, but even if he is shut down for the year, it can survive with Broxton, Marshall and Co.
