Jays' Lind a goner?

08:13 AM ET 09.13 | Six is a magic number this offseason in Toronto, where on Wednesday Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos went over who is "entrenched" on the team, a list that includes shortstop Yunel Escobar, catcher J.P. Arencibia, third baseman Brett Lawrie, right fielder Jose Bautista, centre fielder Colby Rasmus, and first baseman/DH Edwin Encarnacion. Adam Lind is on the endangered list. When asked about the Jays DH/1B, Anthopoulos didn't even bother to shower him with faint praise. ... Does Lind need to win a job next year? "I think it's fair to say that if we feel there's someone else that can do the job, we're not going to be afraid to do that if it's what makes the team better," Anthopoulos said.

He'll find a spot on another roster, guaranteed.

He has change of scenery written all over him. Shame he couldn't keep it going here.

Lind is always linked in my mind to Travis Snider - both showed so much potential and had glimpses of greatness but neither has ever been able to establish themselves as anything more than replacement level players in the majors.

Even Lind's outlier, breakout year (2009) wasn't really that great. He hit .305/.370/.562 with 35 home runs which sounds like an amazing get-some-MVP-votes kind of season. But he combined that with bad defense, no positional value and no speed. His BABIP that year was about 60 points higher than it has been since and he has never come close to those numbers again.

The biggest problem for both guys though really is that neither of them can get on base with Lind a career .314 and Snider a .311 - and if you exclude 2009, Lind's career OBP is actually below 300.

The Jays are trying to build a contender and on a contender I'm afraid Snider and Lind are just bench guys.

Snider's still young. I think the Pirates could turn him around yet.

For Toronto, that's great output. We've had McGriff, Delgado and then NOTHING for production at 1st base.

I think you are right about the OBP issue. Another comparison is with Adam Dunn but Dunn draws enough walks that he doesn't hurt the club when he isn't hitting home runs. Lind is 30 now, so he is pretty much at the "what you see is what you get" stage of his career.

But there are worse hitting first basemen out there, so someone will likely take a shot, hope their batting coach can teach him to not swing at bad pitches...

He never said he was a goner, he said he's not on the no trade list! And if someone else has a better Spring that's who's going to play, the jobs up for grabs!!!

Yep. If they have a hot young prospect that they think needs another year in the minors, Lind can hold down the spot until the kid is ready. But if he looks ready next spring, bye Jose.

The guy at the Toronto Sun must be going for the Pulitzer with a scoop like this...

Hold on... Is this the same Adam Lind that spent 35 games in the Minors this year?
