08:35 AM ET 09.13 | Roberto Luongo is saying all the right things, which is easier to do with a 10-year contract worth nearly $65 million. [In] the unlikely event there is a training camp and Canuck general manager Mike Gillis is willing to go with a $5.33-million backup, Luongo said he'll report to the team for whatever role remains. He seems even better now than when he played. "I have a lot of good friends on the team, even on the staff and coaching staff," Luongo told reporters at Northview Golf Club in Surrey. "It makes it a lot easier to be here. That's why I'm here today. I didn't really hesitate on deciding whether I should come. ... I'm still playing with a bunch of guys that I love and respect. There's no reason for me to be frustrated."

Gillis couldn't find anybody stupider than he is to take this white elephant contact on a goalie that goes down faster than a drunken prom date when he's under pressure.

It sounds like he's there to collect a check and nothing more.

My sister-in-law does the rink boards and banners for the Canucks. She is currently removing all displays with Booby Lou's photo on them.
You do the math.

Dont know what the hell Gillis is thinking here..get rid of him already...take the best deal on the table from whoever....on a side note i dont know why these athletes today demand trades publicly then cry when they're not moved right away...that severely hinders a GM's job to get equal value for them and to do whats best for the franchise...you gonna cry, cry internally and keep your mouth shut then say all the bad things you wanna say AFTER you've been dealt.

It's obviously different with Luongo. He was the starter, the career #1 in Vancouver, then they found someone better and regretted signing his contract. That falls on management, not the player.

I agree with this completely.
It's like the owneras complaining that player contracts are too expensive...REally? And who pays them?

It's a take-what-you-can-get world. Don't blame the player's desire to chart his own course, an ability you gave him, for your inability to do your job correctly.

I hope they are stuck with him.

Yeah, I want that kind of ambition from my goalie. He is okay saying he is fine being a back-up instead of saying he is the starter and only wants to play for a team as a starter. I wish some athletes would grow a pair instead of trying to give nice quotes.

I have been sitting fingers crossed for this possibility also. Leave this time bomb ticking away on the bench and in the dressing room. All apologies to Swamper for mentioning what must surely be a nightmare possibility for him ;-)

kind of, though not the way I might have phrased it.
I do think though, while you can go back and forth on Players/Owners....(and please, let's remember the agents in this fetid stew...) But the owners do have to make the offers i think that's where it starts.....and no, I don't hate rich people, before that comes up again

I agree....if they do deal him, they'll eat a large part of his contract. If he stays, there is a chance either by injury, or poor play on Schneider's part....he could be a good #1 again.
