Peterson targets NFL career rushing record

08:04 AM ET 09.14 | Adrian Peterson says he's still not quite 100 percent, setting the number at 95 percent. Once he regains that last 5 percent of explosion -- a difference that will be "like night and day," he said -- Peterson can revisit his lofty personal goals. Including breaking Emmitt Smith's NFL record of 18,355 rushing yards. ... [Peterson] would have to play well at a high level into his 30s to threaten the record." It's intriguing. You set goals for yourself that you want to accomplish," Peterson said. "What greater accomplishment to get than the all-time leading rusher in the NFL? I think that's something that, God willing, if I stay healthy, it will come with time."

Yeah. and he already has lost time with the injury last year.
Or maybe this is another plea to be traded to a team where he could conceivably do this?

He can do it in Minnesota. He'll just have to play another 25 years.

when you are the only real weapon it's awfully hard to put up big numbers. he can only dream of doing what Emmitt did.

Sanders seldom missed any games either. I think he had 2 years where he didn't play 16.

Payton did it with the Bears. That OL wasn't good until the mid 80's either. At that point, Payton was at the tail end of his career.

if your team sucks it will come down to durability. Sanders and Payton both were. Guess we'll see about AP.

It's too early in your carreer to be talking about that AP - talk about your team getting better

The league has changed, there won't be any big time RB's for a few years until it changes again. For the next five years or so all the passing records will be reset. Might even see some of Jerry Rice's records broken, but rushing records will be safe for some time.

All time rushing record?? Puhhhhllllleeeeeassssseeee!
This kid already had a major injury and at a young age.
Stats show that his chance of having another bad injury goes up like 65% now.
He has no shot in hell at breaking Emmitt's record...let alone will he even be playing at the same age.
Emmitt Smith's record will never be broken. It is incredibly rare to see a back make it that long without losing time to the sidelines...let alone be a factor enough to get the carries.

It's good to have personal goals, AP. Super Bowl is totally out of the question, where you are.
