Bettman feels 'terrible' about lockout

08:27 AM ET 09.14 | For the hockey world, the weekend forecast is gloomy -- again. Practice apparently doesn't ease the pain. As he prepares to pull the NHL plug for the third time, commissioner Gary Bettman Thursday said he feels "terrible" about it. "Nobody wants to make a deal and play hockey more than I do," Bettman said. "This is what I do. This is what my life is about in terms of how I spend most of my waking hours. This is really hard. You only get involved when you understand what the issues are and you know you're doing the right thing for the long-term stability of our game and our sport. This is very hard. And I feel terrible about it." But he's going to do it anyway, and it's because the owners want more of an ever-enlarging pot.

It's amazing they have reached this point.....both owners and players have never made more money than they are making now...and they can't figure a way to work this out....the last thing this sport needs image wise is another work stoppage....this one is gonna hurt more than any of the previous ones....with the economy and unemployment in it's current status these guys are kicking sand in the face of the average working stiff.....

The only thing he feels bad about is that he never made the Penn State hockey team.

None of them will ever starve.
They don't give two hoots about the fans or anything else but money. Not the game either.
There must be some back lash from the fans...collectively.
Let them play to empty arena's like they did as kids when playing in the NHL was a dream...Maybe they might wake up now.
The owners will never fold. No reason to...all of them have other financial interests. But it would indeed be a joyous day to see their rinks empty regardless. Because they are all just plain greedy at the end of the day.
Bunch of FN Mother Truckers....the lot of them, players and owners.

With his 8 million a year...I'm sure well see him balling his eyes out. I hope the Quebec players win their case...as Calgary and Edmonton. Serve some of those owners right anyways. Too bad the Ontario Team can't do that.
Of course...that would eventually cause more dis-taste for Bettman and his Band of Merry Men to keep future Canadian Teams in the NHL.

This is an astoundingly bad statement from an astoundingly bad commisioner. A few weeks after the season ended, Fehr said the players would be willing to play under the current (and exprining) CBA while a new one was being written. Bettman said emphatically NO. Now whether it was a ploy by the players, as has been suggested by some in here to get sympathy, if Bettman had 1/2 an ounce of sense, he would have said yes. It would have been good league P.R. either way. And to those that have said Bettman is merely a mouthpiece for the owners, you are mistaken. This is his lockout, the 3rd in his tenure. He is a disgrace. He is a sad little man, the essence of a little power hungry twerp. He needs to go, and that day cannot come soon enough. I loathe him

Believe me any amount of games the NHL cancel the fans will show their/our disproval by NOT showing up to games....seriously the fans GOTTA show it...saying it is not as good as showing it....in other words actions speak louder than words.

don't you guys get this/ Most of those tickets are season seats, so in the immortal words of Charlie Sheen, the owners can say, "I already got your money dude"
Truly...what do you think the % of "walk-ins" is versus season seats?
That, coupled with the fact that there's always another sucker (we do seem to have an endless supply of those here) are we these fan boycotts, while a nice idea, will never work.

Generally speaking season ticket holders have already invested enough to not go and the casual fans tend to be too fickle to boycott. Which is why you consistenly hear of fans boycotting and it rarely pans out to more then a game or two. (Baseball was the one time exception)

The owners demanded a vote yesterday at the BOG meeting. 30-0 to lockout the players. Bettman is the mouthpiece. Bettman didn't want the vote, the Bruins owner asked for it.

Agree...this is not on Bettman as much as he is hated. Anyone that thinks he can pull a move like that without 30 team owners endorsing it is mistaken.
It's on the owners folks. All of it...and the NHLPA...which could be laid at Fehr's feet for thinking and convincing a bunch of jocks this is a brilliant strategy.

I saw a report, it mentioned the 30-0, but not who asked for the vote. I don't buy it, unless some crapola went down during the week, (i.e. arm-twisting) because statements coming from some owners (Dolan and the guy in Buffalo for example) sure didn't sound all that enthusiastic.
I think the main guys for it are the idiots (Minnesota....) they sign guys to huge contracts, then play the small market card.
It reminds of the olde story about the kid that killed both of his parents, and then asked for leniency because he was an orphan
