Welker being phased out in New England

08:06 AM ET 09.17 | Sunday could otherwise have been a banner day in the career of receiver Wes Welker. With a red-jacketed Troy Brown being inducted into the Patriots' Hall of Fame and watching from Robert Kraft's booth, Welker broke Brown's record to become the all-time receptions leader in Patriots history with his 558th catch. But instead of celebrating the remarkable career of Welker, we were left to ponder how much of it might be left. After the Patriots' absolutely stunning -- and, really, inexcusable -- 20-18 loss to the Cardinals Sunday at Gillette Stadium, there can be no doubt: Welker was set to be phased out of the Patriots' offense. Whether that was short term, or for the rest of the season, we don't know.

Troy Brown looked like a "businessman" from the old red light district in that red jacket.

He still seems to have plenty of gas left in the tank. I'm sure some lesser team will over-pay for him next season if he doesn't get re-signed.

Yesterday's "light on the Welker" playbook wasn't particularly successful, was it? When you lose a game, it's best not to keep doing the same things. Look for a return to more Welker, not less, particularly if Hernandez is out for any period of time.
The Globe isn't the "rag" paper in Boston, but they certainly aren't the most authoritative place to go for sports.

Not if he puts up dismal numbers this season... Plus NE uses him to his potential as a slot WR. Without a Tom Brady getting him the ball, he'll be out of the league in no time.

Welker being phased out.........N.E. is being phased out! Teams are no longer afraid of the Pats. The lore of the Golden Boy is old news now, teams are balanced and hungry. Haven't you've seen what the Giants have done to them? they're definately old new to us. The air of invincibility is ova. The Golden Child even look very average.
OBTW.........Blue, Pats, Pack, Steelers, Boys, Ravens are all 1-1 so whats all the talk about the Blue not making the playoffs and losing their division? Not! same shiitt was songed last season and look what happened, you know the Giants steez!

Belichick does not like players to make comments in public, and Welker has done that a lot, from Rex Ryan to Brady. The Rex foot comments got him benched for the first half of a playoff game last year. BB also does not like players to hold out. This appears to be a "toe the line" message to Welker, but BB is also a smart coach, and I don't think he'll keep Welker off the field if it hurts the Pats' chances to win.
