08:15 AM ET 09.17 | Down the stretch they come, but who has the best schedule to sneak into the postseason? AL wild card: Edge to the Orioles over the Angels. The A's aren't home-free yet, but they in effect have a 4 1/2-game edge in the race for a playoff spot, so we'll concentrate on the two teams with the best shot at the second wild card. ... [The Orioles] don't play another team with a winning record until they go to Tampa Bay for the final three games of the season. Meanwhile, the Angels have the Rangers for six games and the White Sox for three. NL wild card: Edge to the Cardinals over the Dodgers, Pirates and Brewers. The Nationals, Reds, Braves and Giants are basically in, but they'll play a significant part in determining which team joins them as the second wild card.

It's going to be an exciting couple of weeks, culminating into two win-or-go-the-****-home games on October 5th.

the birds are better or the monkies logo is the lucky charm for the orioles? then again the A's got two out off three games this past weekend,,

September 17, 2012  11:04 AM ET

the orioles could pull a surprise at the october playoffs, and that's if they aren't facing the hot hitters in texas,, just saying!!

September 17, 2012  11:05 AM ET

the angels are swimming backwards wonder what is wrong with the halos?? lost any interest in the playoffs already??

September 17, 2012  11:26 AM ET

if the rays don't want the wildcard spot,, the orioles would gladly take it without any complains,,,

September 17, 2012  11:27 AM ET

the dodgers are worse with those new players, i mean the team was playing much better without them than with them,,,,

September 17, 2012  11:28 AM ET

the st luis cards are too passive in their games against lowly and above 500 teams, where is the motivation lately in the birds??

Tigers can still sneak in--they need the Orioles and Angels to lose some games, but they have a fairly easy schedule after they finish with CWS. And the Rays aren't done either, they have a pretty easy schedule and 3 with the O's at the end. Interesting race--not sure I like the 1 game playoff format, but it has been a good September in baseball.

the angels are done as far as i can concern, by winning one game and losing 3 that type of approach wouldn't take any where those passive halos, the rays are pretty much out of luck this year,,,

I love your optimism, but the prevailing opinion among Tiger fans is it's either the Central crown, or go home. The Royals, Indians and Twinkies are not rolling over for anyone.

LOL. Good translation of Alacranese. Thank you I couldn't figure this one out.

All that matter is who has the best record at the end of the last day of the season. Schedule, momentum, all that other stuff is irrelevant. Win games, by any means you can. The Orioles are doing that quite well this year. Hope they get in.

All I know is that Braves fans are going to HATE the new wild card if they get bounced in a single game with the lead they have.
