'Zero' chance Ellsbury signs early

08:15 AM ET 09.18 | While the soap opera that is the 2013 edition of the Red Sox has provided drama, fans can hope the offseason brings some bats. [Will Middlebrooks] will return, presumably healthy, and will get better in his second year in the big leagues. But both [David Ortiz] and Cody Ross -- the next-most productive offensive force on the roster -- are free agents and while both have said it's their wish to returned, they can't be counted until new deals are signed. Further, the team may have to investigate trading Jacoby Ellsbury for pitching. One major league executive, asked recently about the chances of the Sox getting Ellsbury to agree to a contract extension before he reaches free agency, replied without hesitation: "Zero."

If they can't extend him after the season is over then put him on the market this winter.

They'll trade him and then say they need a center fielder......I'll give you Dickey for him....right now.....

To tell you the truth the injuries don't really concern me. They were both freak injuries. It's not like he has a bad back or bad knees. IMO Boston should offer him a 5 year $80M deal over the winter. If he says no then trade him.

If they are going to keep Valentine I would not resign Ortiz or Ross. Ortiz is a bad fit and Ross is just an average ball player. Ellsbury to me is a young J. D. Drew and the Sox know all about dealing with him.

Sounds like market value to me. It is not like there are a bunch of players out there as good as him that you can get your hands on. The guy is a player.

Ellsbury would be foolish to sign before knowing that Bobby V is gone and to whom the Red Sox shall be sold to. The current set of front office fools/owners don't have a clue on how to get this team into contention again. Sad commentary for what was recently a winning team.

Isn't it likely that Red Sox managment will try to sign him to an extensioni in the off-season, and then try to find a trade for front line pitching if Boras is as difficult as he usually can be in such situations?
He's good, but getting older, and appears to be prone to injuries. Don't waste time on him if he can't be signed in the next couple of months, get something for him now.
Cody Ross is a keeper at the right price; productive and a good clubhouse attitude for a team that need leadership for younger players on the way up.
Ortiz is a keeper with a contract with injury/performance incentives. Prefer a year, but would give him two years if conditioned by bonuses for the number of games he plays in.

I believe Ellsbury is from the Seattle area and lives there in the off-season, so he may take a hometown discount to return there if the Sox can work out a sign and trade deal.

With his injury history, Boras as his agent, and going into his walk year no one will offer front line pitching for Ellsbury. The Sox as they are constructed now will probably not compete for the playoffs next year. If they do trade they should try for high ceiling pitching prospects.

Ellsbury just turned 29, carer 297/350/444 hitter, UZR/150 of 9.1.
Mariners already have Franklin Gutierrez, 29 1/2, career 256/308/382 , career UZR /150 of 18.2. Gutierrez hits 300/350/420 on the road, but really struggles with Safeco.
I couldn't find a breakdown for Ellsbury that shows how he hits in Safeco, but it looks to me as though they are very similar players, except that Gutierrez is a much better fielder.
M's also have 26 year old Michael Saunders, about 6 feet 5 inches tall, plays a decent center field, and seems to have enough pop to reach the fences in Safeco.
