Players take heat for taking overseas jobs

08:24 AM ET 09.18 | Do players such as Ilya Kovalchuk, Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby owe anything to their fellow hockey players overseas? If you're taking a stand against the nasty NHL owners, take a stand. Isn't part of taking a stand, and standing up for what you believe is right, enduring the hardships that go with it -- in the NHL players' case, not being able to play at a high level or collect a pay cheque? So why go over to Europe and take away somebody's job? Is there not something fundamentally wrong there? Don't players in Europe count for anything? Just because they're not NHL stars, they don't matter? Hey, the poor sap who gets cut from Metallurg to allow Malkin to play probably needs the money a [heck of a lot] lot more than Malkin does.

It makes them no better than a scab would be over here.

The only case that can be made for the players is if the defectors were to leave the NHL forever and not come back. That would be one way of making a stand.

Unfortunately, as soon as this thing is settled, they will all come back.

Excellent point......if they leave, close the borders to them....players who do this are taking zero risk, so the lockout means nothing to them......if CBA is completed in a short time, suspend players who bolted for at least this season, if there is one........I'll glady watch up and coming hungry players.........

This is where the players lose me. I am completely on their side in this though they have asked for a few stupid things (only a 4 yr deal (WHY), and in the 4th year it goes back to this system so it assures us of another CBA fight).
But why are the star and good players leaving their "brothers"/3rd and 4th liners to make millions oversees when the guys who make nothing compared to them have to sit at home and fight the fight while making no money. That doesn't show unity or solidarity, that shows I'm gonna get mine. Which is fine normally, but right now you have to pretend your all on the same team.

Disagree...they're showing the league "hey you aint the only league in the world to play for"....the only thing i hope for is that NHL players love it somewhere else so much that they stay there and live there...THAT would show the league to never again to lock out the players.

THe NHL knows there are other leagues. These other leagues are paying them a lot less and don't have any of the creature comforts they have in the NHL. This does nothing except let the superstars get an extra mil in their pocket while mr. third line grinder is hoping for a 5k appearance fee at his local supermarket.

Agreed on this...the NHL accepted that CBA for 7 years..its only fair that the players accept it for that long...and that percentage is not even at 43%...the owners are proposing 47% i believe....(but that # should be 50-50 across the board).

Tend to agree. It's a lockout not a strike. Players were willing to play until a new contract is reached.

Precisely. Scab is as Scab does.

Being negotiated as we speak. It's either gonna be Columbus or with Jaromir in the Czech Republic. I'm betting on Columbus when the league starts up again. They're usually so wise in player decisions.

Who ever does up with a bag of used pucks and tape roll ends first.

It's a known reality that the 3rd and 4th liners always are making "room" for the "top six". Without them...well, it's pretty obvious.
I have said it before and stand by it.
If the NHL "stars" want to go to another league...then make a commitment to that team and their fans to stay there for a least 3 seasons.
The KHL is equally to blame here too. They have "adjusted and modified" the rules to allow these guys to play, temporarily, for them.
Why?
It makes absolutely no sense to me at all.
You build a Team of players, your fans get excited...Russian fans are passionate as much as North American fans are...as a Fan, the last thing I would want are rent-a-players that will drop that team like a hot Ovechkin stick as soon as the NHL resumes. So what is the point?
The Team Statistics are a farce, playoff hopes a pipe dream, career KHL players out of work and off their own fans radar, the whole league balance and real life competitiveness a fantasy.
It's like your favourite NHL getting a star player...but only till Christmas.
Then what?
It makes no sense at all and I'd feel ripped off as a fan there as much as I would here were it to happen.
As a fan, you pull for your team...TEAM. Good or bad. Not some last minute spoiled superstar disrespecting his own team and league who does not need the money coming to say...hey, look at me.
There really is no end to the conceited and ME attitude that has evolved in the NHL player mentality over the last decade.
Hope they all have their i-phone 5 in their suitcases...that were probably freebies anyways.
F-them all.!

Why?
Does your Boss pay you 50% of his profits?
How about players also paying 50% of losses then...?
Would that be fair?

No...neither would be...UNLESS, the players were part of the ownership and business partners that have made a financial investment to be one.

Mario is a classic case of that happening. He had to play, to make money for the TEAM just to get his money out of the deal.

I believe Mario received partial ownership because the team could not pay him the money due on his contract.

While I'm not quite as riled up about it all as you are I agree with everything you stated.
