Tomlin ready to take carries away

08:00 AM ET 09.19 | Mike Tomlin loved talking about running backs on Tuesday -- just not Pittsburgh's. "All of [Oakland's] backs are capable of making house calls," Tomlin said. He's not so impressed with his own through the first two games, and he talked about cutting back the number of different plays in their repertoire because of it. "We haven't run the ball as well as we have liked," Tomlin said. The Steelers have 141 yards rushing in two games and a paltry 2.6 yards per carry, both ranked 30th in the NFL. Jonathan Dwyer leads them with 71 yards on 21 carries and Isaac Redman has 45 on 23runs. Their other two backs, Chris Rainey and Baron Batch, have six carries between them for 8 yards combined.

A paltry 2.6 ypc? Chris Johnson's grill is green with envy. That or spinach.

After two games, numbers like yards per carry don't mean much yet.

Again, limited contact in practice per the CBA, not risking your starters in pre-season, and the teams aren't really in shape for the regular season yet.

Losing DeCastro hurt, Foster isn't very good and it's the beginning of the year in a new offense. They'll get a little bit better as the season goes on. Mendenhall probably won't be 90% and Rainey is a receiver, Haley will figure that out soon.

Add in the game has changed. You don't become a passing league and keep the old running game as it was. Giants were LAST in the NFL in rushing last year. The Patriots win every year with not much of a running game. Something had to give.
Note: In 2011 the Lions passed the ball 67% for all plays during the season. The Patriots were the median , running the ball 27 plays per game. Add in the end of the one back style and RB by committee and there you have it.
For any lost soul interested. Interesting stats.

In all the years I've seen Tomlin, the only thing I've ever seen him excited about was the 4th qtr drive and score the other day, fist pumpin, hi fiving and spittin player lingo on the sideline..........so for anyone to suggest that Tomlin is impressed about anything, just don't get it. This guy is hard to impress is my take on....and thats a good thing.

I believe the last team to place in the top five in both passing and running, and win the SB, was the Saints.

Good thing they didn't resign their OC who took them to 2 SB in 5 years so they could hire Haley who also is struggling in the red zone and with running the football this year. Maybe it's not the OC, maybe it's the awful OL!

No, they miss good run blocking by the OL.

You nailed it. This is the same patched up O line as last year despite spending two high draft picks on the o line. DeCastro is out and Adams is a master at "look-out blocks"*
* yells "Look out Ben" when pass rusher gets past him.....
