There aren't enough good ones to go around. Already, we know that the Diamondbacks will be looking. ... The Tigers figure to be looking, too. They have a $6 million option on Jhonny Peralta for 2013, but Peralta's defensive shortcomings at short seem to become more obvious by the day. Would the Tigers take a chance on Escobar, thinking that he could be helped by the positive Latin American presence in their clubhouse? They might. Remember, the Tigers were the team that rushed to put Delmon Young back in their lineup earlier this year, after Young was accused of using an anti-Semitic slur.

Peralta is not the defensive liability he's made out to be. His range isn't spectacular, but he's very solid, and what he does get to, he handles well.

As a Jay's fan, I'd love to see Escobar traded. I am extremely disappointed in the lame suspension - what he did was inexcusable and his non-apology was a joke. They Jays blew this opportunity to send a message that intolerance is unacceptable. I've never booed a home player before, but I will boo Escobar.

Ned I think it's a shame that people get so easily offended. The guy made a mistake and the Jays should have handled it differently. Call him on the carpet and school him as to what is expected of him.

They won't say, and apparently free speech has been outlawed. It involved a pejorative term for an alternate lifestyle.

Honestly, I'm not easily offended. In this case, Escobar displayed a homophobic remark (in Spanish) on his eye-black - his "apology" was "I'm sorry people were offended" - it was scripted and did not seem sincere. If he would have explained what happened and demonstrated even an ounce of understanding that what he did was wrong, then I would be more forgiving. As it stands, this smells of "I'm sorry that someone caught me" and no admission of any wrongdoing.

I agree; Peralta has been good on defense in Detroit, and the last 2 years he has been a better defender than Escobar. They were both born in 1982, so not an age improvement.

I mean, Escobar is a nice shortstop, but not an upgrade in Detroit. Maybe the Mariners would want him--Brendan Ryan is sort of a Mark Belanger type--great glove, can't hit to save his soul. Escobar would provide a little better offense

I don't think it is a big deal. Latin culture is different than ours. It's not like he said something like "I hate gay people."

And who is going to play SS if we trade him?
