08:12 AM ET 09.19 | Larry Bowa came away impressed, but without a job. [Bowa] said Tuesday that he will not be the Houston Astros' next manager, saying that he and Astros GM Jeff Luhnow agreed that the team needs to go with someone younger. Bowa, 66, said that while he was "very impressed" with Luhnow, the team faces a lengthy rebuilding process and would be better served by a manager who could grow with the club. The Astros interviewed Bowa last Friday. The team also has interviewed Nationals bench coach Bo Porter, Rays bench coach Dave Martinez and its interim manager, Tony DeFrancesco. "It was a super interview," said Bowa, a former major-league, player, coach and manager who is now an analyst for MLB Network.

I pity the fool who has to take control of that team. They've got one hell of an uphill battle.

I would look at Sandberg first to see if he was interested, if not I would give old cardinals utility infielder and current Triple A manager Tom Lawless the job.

Too bad for Larry. But, that means I still get to hear him on the radio. He's got excellent insight into the game.

Who ever gets that job needs patience and a promise of at least three years from management.

I like Bowa, but I doubt he would have the patience to put up with the rookies.

wise up: What Houston needs is a guy like Bowa. Someone who has some experience dealing with young talent. Let them know that there will be no nonsense and be able to teach them how to play the game right.
