Love makes bold T-Wolves prediction

08:11 AM ET 09.20 | Even though he's young, Kevin Love's basketball resume, which includes All-Star Games and gold medals, seems to lack something important: NBA playoff experience. That could change in 2012-13 as the Timberwolves have beefed up a roster that has their Western Conference competition on notice. "It will be a big surprise to me if we didn't make a huge leap this year and make it to the playoffs," the Lake Oswego native told me Wednesday. ... "We'll have more firepower in terms of veterans. [Brandon Roy and Andrei Kirilenko] will help our locker room and on the court. It will make Coach Adelman's job a lot easier. If everything is put together, if [Ricky Rubio] comes back healthy, we're going to be a force to be reckoned with."

If everyone stays healthy (not including Brandon Roy because he isn't healthy to begin with) they could be anywhere from a 5-8 seed. With another year of experience, they should win some of the close games they lost last year.

They certainly have a chance. Adelman is a good coach. But the West is very tough. They could need 50 wins to get that 8th seed.

I'm not sure that's the best thing for the franchise right now. I think one more high draft pick (not wasted on a PG) could help them even more... make them more of a contender.

I didn't know Love was from New York, ya know we have an Oswego in upstate New York. I know there could be other Oswego's around the country, but I'm just sayin...........

Being a Buffalo native I too know about Oswego :) But nah..Love is from Oregon, he used to play against Kyle Singler in HS. As an avid DUKE fan, I remember watching those 2 battle it out when they had one of Kyle's HS games on ESPN.
With that said-- I want what Love is smoking.."force to be reckoned with" yeah, maybe to the Bobcats, Bucks, Raptors and the rest of the underlings...I highly doubt LAL, MIA, BOS, OKC, SAS are worried about the T-Pups

Well said. A winning culture needs to be established. I think they did a pretty good job of improving the team being that MSP is right now not exactly an NBA FA destination. A tier 1 FA (outside of maybe one of our own) wouldnt sign here, but i think they did a good job of grabbing some guys that can help (AK, Shved and Bud) while getting rid of guys that cant (Beasley, Johnson). The West will be tough and i agree we really need Rubio to play well and healthy. As a fan of the team its just great to be mentioned as a potential playoff team after years of having no chance whatsoever.

The Timberwolves won two of three against SAS last season and their two losses to OKC were by 4 and 9 points, the latter came in double-OT. They were contending for a #8 seed until Rubio's knee injury. They've added competent players at the wings to replace Beasley and Wes Johnson. Once Rubio returns to action, they will be significantly improved.

That's a good point. But being mired in perpetual mediocrity is pretty hard on the morale too.

Fair enough. It sounds like your basing your opinion on last year's team and the years beforehand of total incompetence. You may be right in the end but i think after watching them play last year and the moves they have made that they do have a good chance of being a team that teams don't want to play. I think they are significantly better than the underlings you mentioned though.

If everyone stayed healthy last year, they were a better team than the Utah Jazz, for sure. They still need to address the SG position (I am not convinced that Roy will be the answer), but they added an AK-47, who looked really good in the Olympics. And, they lost a lot of close games last year. Adelman is a good enough coach to where, with an extra year of experience for the team, they should win some of those close games they lost last year and compete with Denver and Dallas for the 6th spot.

Minnesota was primed to make the playoffs last season, and then Rubio went down and the rest is history.
