08:15 AM ET 09.20 | Believe it or not, defensive mistakes weren't what set Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum off. The miscue that had [Sveum] seething came when Luis Valbuena stopped paying attention on the base paths to end a sixth-inning rally. ... Shortly after his two-run double brought the Cubs to within a run at 5-4, Valbuena took his lead off second base while appearing to remove his batting gloves. Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips tiptoed to the bag, took the throw from pitcher Mike Leake and applied the tag on Valbuena, who never knew what happened. End of inning. ... [Sveum] planned on giving struggling rookie Josh Vitters a break from third base for a few days. It's possible Valbuena inspired the manager to change his mind.

The Cubs won't have the Astros to look down on next season. I haven't seen anything yet to show this team is poised to turn things around.

Stick two forks in them.

Sveum should have sent a message to his club and bench Valbuena for the rest of the game and let him play with his glove at the end of the bench.

Guess he forgot to call time out.

Heard that play on the radio. Marty B and the Cowboy went crazy over it. Couldn't believe it.

Alacran, as you've discovered yourself, America is no longer land of the free. We're land of the taxed to death, land of the ruled.

Yeah, you're not being melodramatic or anything. Evil hegemony is really keeping you down.

Valbuena's singular base-running gaffe gets a much harsher punishment that Castro's multiple base-running gaffes, not to mention all of Starlin's fielding gaffes. Way to coddle your "superstar" who has a .747 OPS, Sveum.

Yeah, this is the first year of unloading the current big-leaguers for whatever you can get; next year will be more of same, plus calling up a few from the minors to see if they can play. Year after will be the team of the young guys. The year after that (about 2015) they might be competitive.

I don't know why teams don't just tell their fans what they are in for when rebuilding; I suppose they figure it would kill season ticket sales for the next 3 years.

Rizzo looks like a nice pick-up, though.

Well when you are 35 games out of first place and your "lovable loser fans" don't care, I can see forgetting to stay on the bag. Apparently, the 3rd base coach was asleep at the wheel or trying to catch some eye candy in the stands, which is hard to do in Chicago.

Castro got picked off again today.

Looks like someone is still avoiding the fact that the Cubbies are terrible and show signs of getting even worse.

typical lazy editing, can't even bother to find a picture of Sveum in the right jersey. What a joke.

Ja hey der, looks like you get your rocks off on following the "Cubbies" misfortune. There's a name for little **** like you, but you can't say it here. Go into yo mama's closet and pull it there, maybe she has a blue dress with red C's on it. That would really make your day.
