Owners' plan leads to more trouble

08:26 AM ET 09.20 | If two-thirds of NHL teams struggle to profit, the game's issues may extend beyond the owners' proposal. But the top third is the commissioner's office power base, so the league's offer to the bottom two-thirds is to have the players pay for their losses, or enhance what money they do make. It is a temporary fix, as the 2005 deal was, because it isn't meant to fix the game but to buy time for the league office until the next CBA. ... [The league's power brokers] don't want to move four teams to places where their own interests might be impinged. That leaves only revenue sharing and squeezing the players, and the second is only a temporary fix until the top ten owners start circumventing the new CBA as they have done all the past ones.

I wish Butt-man would get his head out of his, well, you now! I'd love to see the league reduce the number of teams by four. Why do they keep propping teams up in cities where the fans simply don't care?

Same old plight of most Corporations and businesses, 10% of the customers make up 80 of the revenues...so pucker up.

Maybe because everyone criticizes them too much in Cities...(Nations...) where the fans do care... :-)

Its not just the Buttgoblin its the owners in the upper third looking out for their own interests instead of the league's. Part of what made football expand so much is that the owners realized that if all the teams in the league are in good shape then they will be better off too.

exactly right. But Dwarfus Horribilius and that 33% (mayas well use modern parlence...everything now is stated as the 1%, the 47%) are not being terribly forward thinking here. I don't need to state my often stated case here, but maybe those guys need to wake up. The health of the league with only a few less teams...but all in areas that actually care...would be assured.

The NHLPA doesn't want contraction either.

but they both should face the reality. I always use the phrase "winter wheat" for theswe things. they have to think about the future, which there won't be one of if tnhey keep to this course

Absolutely right. Contraction = Fewer Jobs. They'd support a team in Birmingham. Quite frankly revenue sharing is the answer. It has turned the NFL into a money machine and results in higher TV revenues as well. But the top 6 to 10 franchises/owners oppose anything that they see as reducing, even temporarily, their own profits.

Well the Romans thought feeding Christians to the lions (real ones not the Detroit variety) and gladiators killing each other would last forever. Nothing lasts forever without change (nothing that charges for tickets that is).

That's correct. Which is why the league needs to end it's ridiculous plan of putting teams in non traditional markets and move them to places where people care about the game.

Bingo.

September 20, 2012  10:14 AM ET

All of you are correct, but the bottom line is Bettman cant do the job of a) getting the owners to realize this b) getting the players and owners to the table to hash this fact out for the overall health of the league and future players

Bettman couldnt find his way out of a paper bag.

September 20, 2012  10:18 AM ET

Pre season games are being cancelled , Arena and Club staff are being layed off and/or having salary reduced. Players say Owners do not care about the league. As long as the Players expect more then 50% of revenues in a 2nd tier league i will be unable to believe in there sincerity.

I will say this till I'm blue in the face there is no point expecting contraction IT ISN"T GOING TO HAPPEN the other teams would have to buy the contracted teams off the ousted owners 4 owners that's 600-750 million dollars the owners would have to fork out and then there is the guaranteed player contracts they would have to honor get your head out of the sand guys IT ISN"T GOING TO HAPPEN

jeeez.

September 20, 2012  10:37 AM ET

There is the possibility that the league offers a olive branch to the players of 44 more jobs and then announce that there will be expansion in 2015 to Q City and the golden triangle so as to get the players to sign the CBA but alas that wouldn't happen till at least November as the money losing teams (except the Wild) aren't bleeding money at this time as they have no one to pay the American hockey contract starts at the Winter Classic I expect they'll want a hard knocks like BO show again American Thanksgiving they settle couple X games and the start at the end of the 1st full week in December
