Lockout puts European hockey vets out of work

08:28 AM ET 09.20 | Calgarian Domenic Pittis hasn't seen an autumn in his hometown in years. Till now. Stuck at home in mid-September, the shifty forward wants to hammer out a deal with a team in the Swiss-A league, where, with a high degree of success, he's plied his craft for the past eight winters. But the National Hockey League lockout, which frees up all of the stars, is gumming up the works. European clubs, weighing their options, are trying to land the biggest fish. ... Meanwhile, chaps like Pittis, who are usually overseas by the end of July, remain in a holding pattern. He could be bitter. He is not. "I know some guys are upset about it, but it's an open market, right?" says Pittis, who turns 38 on Oct. 1.

Pittis is worried that he'll have to take a step backwards and play for the Flames.

Agree totally Spiny. The ramifications of these grown children to not come up with a deal here is now not only affecting the employees of teams here who happen to be regular joes but also players who depend on hockey for a living across the pond. I think the leagues over there should lockout NHLers as well (like Sweden has). Both sides (owners and NHLPA) need to learn a lesson.
