08:14 AM ET 09.20 | Yunel Escobar may yet find his way out of Toronto in the offseason, but it nearly happened much more quickly. Interviewed from New York on The Fan 590 radio in Toronto, [Alex Anthopoulos] said Escobar was "stupid, selfish, shameful [and] insensitive" to have written a homophobic slur on his eye-black and worn it during a Toronto Blue Jays game last Saturday. Upon learning of the incident, the Blue Jays' general manager said he considered suspending Escobar for up to a year or releasing him. Ultimately, the Toronto shortstop was suspended without pay for three games and ordered to undergo sensitivity training. He also apologized to his teammates in a clubhouse meeting and publicly during a news conference.

I wish that the team had more spine in this case and would have doled out a harsher punishment. Three games is barely lip service to a serious issue.

Are you serious? I'm happy someone noticed it and spoke up. Professional sports have no room for discrimination - just ask Jackie Robinson. I cannot begin to fathom why someone would put incidiary remarks on their selves to begin with, but to think you could get away with it just smacks any and everyone in the face who is a minority in any way, shape, or form. The Jays should release him outright, and he can sit in the unemployment line next to Cabrera in the off-season.

If he would have made a reference towards Jews, Blacks or any other group there would have been a bigger uproar. Because it was a gay slur people think it wasn't that big of deal. Gays are hated upon every day, and religious type don't denounce it because they believe the bible tells them so.
