08:07 AM ET 09.21 | Barely 30, Suns forward Channing Frye has an awful lot on his plate. [Frye] never could have imagined life would pile any more on him after suffering a season-ending injury in April, undergoing shoulder surgery in May and enduring two surgeries on each eye for his 4-month-old daughter's cataracts. There was no imagining he could have a heart virus. Frye said he expects to miss the coming season due to an enlarged heart caused by a virus that is rare and only treatable with rest, if that even works. ... [Frye] told azcentral sports several times that he must have six months of rest and expects to miss the season that runs to April. He said his activity will be limited to yoga and golf.

Stick an IV in him. Then a needle. Then a scalpel. Wash-Rinse-Repeat.

As I said elsewhere on AZCentral:

In the interest of his health and for the peace of mind it will invariably bring to both him and his family, perhaps he should consider retirement as opposed to waiting it out and seeing if he gets better (since that may not work). He's done well as a Suns player and though it would be disappointing to hang up the sneaks so early, there would be absolutely no shame in it.

Regardless, best wishes on your recovery and future, Channing. I haven't always been a fan of your play, but that's a minor triviality given that you're also a human being like the rest of us.

In response to someone who questioned my idea about him retiring and potentially leaving ~$20M on the table:

He's made plenty of money already as a professional. I don't suspect that Frye is of the entourage type and living excessively. I'm sure he's got more than enough to live on should it come to that. If he values his health, retirement should be a definite consideration. Given the severity of his condition, he could drop dead in the middle of a game. Is $20M really worth that?

Financially, that would be a bad move. For him to declare his retirement, he'd lose whatever $$$$ that is on the balance of his contract. For Frey, the smart move would be to stay on the payroll as an active player and continue getting paid. For the Suns, the smart move would be to buy out Frey's contract and get him off their salary cap.

Expect Frey to agree to a buy that will pay him close to what's guaranteed by the terms of his contract. But don't expect to see Frey 'retitre' anytime soon.
