A modern-day WHL?

08:23 AM ET 09.21 | Of course, the hockey landscape is very different now than it was in the Original Six days, but is there a league that might be capable of competing for the world's top players after a lockout? As long as owners keep together they tend to get their way if only because when the NHL shuts down it quickly becomes a buyer's market for hockey talent, with players like Jason Spezza and Joe Thornton willing to play in Switzerland essentially for free, after the cost to insure their multi-million NHL contracts is factored in. But an aggressive KHL could change things, and in some ways already has. Certainly the NHL's Russian-born stars have embraced the chance to stay at home and get paid during the lockout.

No, the WHL, the Western Hockey League. You know, cos Russia is west of North America and has a hockey league, and.....oh, I can't do this. The interns just screwed up again.

i thought they were gonna go with a story about broads playing pro hockey...

September 21, 2012  11:20 AM ET

while it'll never happen, it'd be GREAT to see the players association change their name to just "Professional Hockey Players association" (ditch the National Hockey League part) and offer to start a new league on their own. They collectively have enough money to create new teams on their own and to rent our local arenas to put on games and let the fans show up for pennies on the dollar.

THAT would really put the vice on the owners, to see these guys playing for nearly nothing filling up venues for fans to watch quality hockey. The owners would go ****!
