A's 'high school-ish' antics anger Yankees' Eric Chavez

09:58 AM ET 09.23 | Eric Chavez stared into the visitor's dugout from first base as each devastating dagger cleared the left field fence. It was bad enough the A's were delivering what Chavez, at that moment, assumed was a devastating Yankees loss. But after each of three 13th-inning homers that turned 5-5 to an 9-5 Oakland advantage, Chavez said, most of those on the A's bench participated in what he described as "an orchestrated clapping, chanting" celebration that he had a great view of from first -- a view that made him angrier and angrier with each long ball. Chavez told The Post he considered the acts "high school-ish" and "pretty unprofessional." "I thought it was distasteful," Chavez said. "That's not cool. That's not how you play the game. I am all for having fun, but that crossed the line. It is all about being humble." Chavez said he was not sure if any of his teammates saw a performance he termed "a little slap in the face" and wouldn't suggest it served as a rallying point to spur the Yankees to their most stunning victory of the season. But he did acknowledge this as an example of how quickly and powerfully emotions and fates can turn at this time of year.

In baseball, words are words; explanations are explanations, promises are promises, but only performance is reality. Harold Geneen!

Lots of unwritten rules coming out of NY, whether its the Yankees or the Giants.

Chavez may have a point, but that horse has left the barn. Hot dogging and excessive celebrations are a part of the Sports landscape for the most part.

Just beat 'em again today, Yankees!

Yankees have annoyed me for 35 years....being annoyed is part of sports

September 23, 2012  11:07 AM ET

Their exuberance may have been a little over the top, but the A's are a young team. Chavez's comments make him come off like a whiny little quim. Just go out there and beat them and they'll shut up.

agree- I mean they are playing big boy sports, not golf.....why is he paying attention to the a's bench?

Its hard not to pay attention when a bunch of third place nobodies are whooping it up like they've won something since the mid 80's. Nobody likes to be shown up and embarrassed at their job...and sure enough it came back to bite them on their ****.

Be a professional. Win the game like you've done it before. Then go into your clubhouse and whoop it up. This isnt little league.

If Chavez cries any harder he might throw his back out.

Hell. if teams like the Yankees werent raiding their roster every year, maybe the As would have done something since the 80s. Hearing a bunch of overpaid whiners like the Yanks complain is the lamest thing in baseball.

It may have been bush league but if you don't like the celebrating, don't give a team anything to celabrate about. Serving up three taters in one inning of a tie game is just asking for embarrassment, anyway.

I'll bet the A's weren't clapping and chanting after they screwed the pooch by letting the Yankees come right back from four runs down and tie the game again.

What he should be upset about is his team mates jogging on the base path. It is insulting to the game to see Swisher and Cano and Jones and a few others not run hard.

Sounds to me like both bullpens stunk yesterday!

So, Chavez is mad because the A's were celebrating a big hit?

Perhaps it's envy because he had so few as an A, despite receiving a fat paycheck from the ownership.
