Will Detroit ever pay its fine?

08:32 AM ET 09.24 | Gary Bettman came down hard on the Red Wings going into the weekend, leveling a reported $250,000 fine after Jim Devellano referred to the players and other league employees as "cattle." To the fans, [Bettman] said figuratively that he is a just and even-handed authority of the league, willing to dispense punishment to anyone on his side of the fence if they take a shot at the players. ... Bettman needs to build at least some trust with the fans. Giving the appearance of coming down hard on one of his own will not hurt in that regard. No one should feel too badly for the Red Wings. Chances are that $250,000 may never make its way to the league office.

no, doing that trick Daffy Duck did where **** a lighted match after drinking a bunch of explosives would step in the right direction (at least for THIS hockey fan)....this just makes him look like the autocratic jackwagon that he is

heck -- if they are not going to pay anyway, why not make the fine $10 mil

will the league Office accept slightly used squid as periodic installment payments ?

Not sure about that but, the NHLPA would accept food stamps. :-)

But, it does nothing to keep trust and unity among owners. If Buttman loses Detroit, others might soon follow which, for us fans, would be a good thing.

Hmm, towing the company line gets you fined? That seems counterintuitive. It almost seems like Bettman has no idea what he's doing.

"Almost," santapig?

Reminds me a saying one of the old wrestlers used to say: "You have to study to be that stupid"

My conclusion is that Gary B studies every day

Yeah. I mean the owners wouldn't put someone in charge, and keep him employed, that had no idea, right? I mean that would just be...crazy stupid. Look at his accomplishments...he's got three lockouts notched on his belt. The other commissioners can only boast, what, one? Take that "other sports that are more popular because I keep **** up."

The Globe and Mail doesn't have any more credibility with me than Bettman does. Sort of like getting a ransom demand on (used) toilet paper.

What did they use to write the note?

It wouldn't surprise me if this was set up between Ilitch and Bettman. Bettman tells Ilitch to have someone make the statement so he can "fine" the Wings. If the fine isn't going to be paid, then it's all a show anyway.

WHAT?!?!?
Are you insinuating that Dwarfus Horribilius is doing something not totally above board? (if not, he can use the excuse that he can't reach it!)
I am shocked

I think what I'm suggesting is that both sides are wasting time on shenanigans instead of getting down to the business of getting a CBA done. Just a theory, which is mine.

That all sounds too complicated for the Dwarf. And Illitch is too trustworthy of an owner to believe he'd come up with such a plot (looks both ways as he stuffs Little Caesar's into his mouth and then wipes hands on Red Wings jersey).
