Why Phillies must lower Halladay expectations

08:07 AM ET 09.26 | For Roy Halladay, work ethic isn't the issue -- it's that time is no longer on his side. Point is, Halladay will do everything within his power to maximize his ability to pitch. But the laws of human physiology are not within his power, and the Phillies cannot just assume that 2012 is something that can be rectified through offseason conditioning. It would not be fair to Halladay if they entered 2013 counting on him to be the guy who averaged 242 innings with a 2.40 ERA in his first two seasons in Philadelphia. ... It isn't that it can't happen, or even that it probably won't. It's that the Phillies need to be prepared if Halladay pitches like a mortal, or if his body ages like one.

get what you can while you can........phillies should continue the overhaul this off season and get some young blood...two years worth of humble pie should be enough for mgt to understand they acted as if steroids were still around, keepin all the old guys, and must now pay the overdue bill.....

Doesn't seem natural to doubt what Doc can do. I think I'll wait and see for myself but I think it's more likely to be something positive for Philly.

I think the Phillies are ahead of the Daily News here. Signing Cliff Lee was their way to prepare for a bit of a drop-off from Halliday--it just wasn't enough to prepare for the absence of Halliday, Howard, & Utley, combined with drop-off from Victorino. They got Pence to replace Werth, and that didn't work either.
Their rotation will be fine, they need to identify a couple of outfielders and a third baseman. I think they traded for a young catching prospect; if he isn't ready next year, they might need to find another catcher.

As you near the end of your career, baseball gets a lot harder to play and becomes more of a job!

Howard was pretty average -- if not below -- this year and I wouldn't count on Utley playing a full season ever again.
Come on, Chasin, I'm not saying it's all doom and gloom for the Phillies, but if you're not concerned at all about some of the contracts and the performance they got out of them this season, you're just burying your head in the sand.

Your man will be 36 next season and if the Phils expect must out of him next season they need to pull him after 5 or 6 innings to save his arm for the long haul.
