08:14 AM ET 09.27 | On the upside of missing the playoffs, Jed Hoyer and the Cubs do have that much more time to plot their future. For example, Josh Vitters started at third Wednesday. He's one of the many prospects being looked at for next season. The results so far have been mixed. ... The Cubs do have a significant amount of money coming off the books and it could be a busy offseason. "We will have financial flexibility," Hoyer said. "We've been diligent to make sure we do have flexibility and we're efficient going forward. We'll obviously be active in the free agent market. That's a big part of our research and work now is evaluating free agents. We have some money to spend and we'll focus on it heavily." Hoyer isn't looking at the Cubs record this year.

Josh Hamilton, perhaps?

i hope the Cubs learned a lesson from the Fish last year and not just go out and buy high price players in the off season just to get high lines and probably a lot of them will flop.

The Cubs are good at spending lots of money on overvalued free agents, then regretting it.

Theo should have learned his lesson on the perils of signing big ticket FA's back in Boston.

Spend. Spend. Spend. Beckett. Gonzales. Crawford...

... and Lackey, to boot.

Isn't that what they have always done? I'm confused now

As of late, yes. However, these are new people spending the money, so it's exciting!

Um, on a team with as many needs as this one, blowing a SIGNIFICANT amount of it on a streaky (altho extremely talented) outfielder like Hamilton is probably NOT the best route.

They've already done that with Soriano.

NO one will want to play for the Cubs.......there cursed.

QUOTE(#4):

It takes more than one year to repair their farm system. They've already warned to expect more of the same next year(and the next). The only free agents they will be after are of the budget variety similar to this years(DeJesus, Maholm, Stewart, Mather, ect). They probably will then trade them away at the deadline again like they did Maholm.

I think you are right. Part of the reasons given for the trades for Crawford Victorino, and Pence were that the GMs for LA and SF looked at the upcoming free agent market and didn't see much talent available. (I assume they think Hamilton will either stay in Texas or not be interested in the west coast.) Even if you add Hamilton to a last place team, that only gets, what--last place with a slightly better record?

Hopefully for the Cubs fans, they will spend more wisely that the previous regime.

Pass Da Pop Corn I have to see this one!!!

Sounds like a bidding war shaping up between the Cubs and BoSox, both with money to spend on FA.
Which GM will be the biggest spender/greater fool?

Say what you want about payroll. As of this moment, looking at the top 10 payroll teams, 80% have records of .500 or better. Teams 11-21, only 9 of 20 (45%), have records of .500 of better.
