08:16 AM ET 09.28 | After Thursday night's discouraging 6-0 loss in Toronto, Ivan Nova was the first to admit he didn't pitch well. In what possibly was Nova's final regular-season start, the right-hander gave up four runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings. "I didn't get the results I wanted," said Nova, whose next start is slated for Tuesday night against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium in the next-to-last game of the regular season. "I am working on everything possible to make pitches and get people out. This year has been really bad for me." Girardi said he hasn't decided to hook Nova from the rotation, but when asked if that could change between now and Tuesday, Girardi said, "We will see."

Why Wait, Bro?

He looked good for a couple of starts but now he's struggling. Guess we should wait and see how tight things are by his next start.

Apart of leading the division and Jeter's season this havent been a good season for them. Too many injuries and struggles. Great job by Girardi and his staff.

So why was Phelps taken out of the rotation? And IF they even make the playoffs no way is Nova a starter, so why wait. I think Joe needs to figure out how to set it up for a one game playoff starter.

Lost in Nova's sorry outing is the real story, Once again the Yankees fail to produce offensively against a solid/good MLB starter. Question? Name the last month this team beat a MLB pitcher with a winning record and a ERA under 4.00?
Kudos to Jeter on the year, but note, his latest hitting streak is shaky. In the last TEN games, all big games, he is hitting .222 with NO extra base hits. And that sums up this team and it's deeper problem, they are not very good offensively, don't care what stats you throw out there. I watch them everyday, add in they are awful base runners, cannot bunt or steal or hit and run and this is just a disappointment in waiting. Heck, they do not even run hard in a pennant race. They are a reflection of Girardi and his laid back play it safe style.

Yeah, I'm liking Phelps. Seems to me like he's more consistent than Nova has been this year.

I think we ARE vulnerable because of that lack of versatility. We can never lay down a nice bunt when we need one. We have a few guys that can steal bases to a degree, Ichiro and now that we have Gardner back, he too can steal bases. Granderson strikes out a lot. It never feels like we're anything special this year because we're one dimensional at the plate.

And, sadly, this slide seems destined to continue over the next several years unless the Yanks change their mind about the $189 mil salary cap in 2014.
I see lean years ahead - at least until they can get out from under A-Rod's and Tex's contracts (and to some extent CC's).
Disagree?

Honestly. They play uninspired ball and have all year. It has reached the point where even Jeter stood at the plate last week and never ran on a ball he hit fair which the first baseman dropped. I blame Girardi, he sets the tone. Cano going into second base standing up last night and almost getting out was typical.

I agree, but something can be done this winter. Nova would bring good value in a trade and look, if Pineda is for real and returns healthy, you add in CC, Hughes a Pettite return ( I think he does ) Phelps and possibly a resign of kuroda and that makes five. Where does Nova fit in that group? He doesn't.
Granderson has trade value and one year left on his contract. Heck with the homeruns. He is a low average hitter who is on pace to strike out 200 times. Really? do you want to sign him for the five years $80 million he will seek in a year? Not me, not when 2 of your 3 best system players are outfielders.
Swisher ? You want him for $30+ million for the next three years?
You can blow up some parts of this team now and get younger and faster and not increase your payroll. At least not by very much.

I would agree if this was a young team with a bunch of rookies, if if you're a veteran player making millions and you need the manager to motivate you to hustle and play with passion, you shouldn't be in the league.

You can never have enough starting pitching. Somebody is bound to get hurt at some point during the season. The Yankees coming into the season were supposed to have too much pitching, but they lose Pineda for the whole year, Pettite for 2.5 months, CC for a month, and Nova for 2 weeks. I don't have a problem with trading Nova if you can get something good in return, but they better have enough pitching depth in their system in case one of the starters goes down with injuries during the year.

I wonder how much Jeter's foot really hurts--he has been an alert, hustle player his whole career, and this just doesn't seem typical of him. I guess they are hoping to win the division, because it would be better to be a division winner and lose Jeter for the playoffs than to rest him now, and enter a 1 game wildcard playoff with a slightly healthier Jeter. Or miss the playoffs altogether, although that doesn't seem too likely at this point.l

Interesting ideas. If you trade Granderson and let Nick ("Jayson Werth Money") Swisher walk, who plays outfield? Gardner, ?, ?. Resign Ichiro for a year? Give Chris Dickerson a shot and/or bring up one of the kids?

I almost lost my mind when Cano didn't slide. But you are right. That is par for the course with this team. I have very low expectations for them in the playoffs.
