Longhorns may hire Applewhite
Alabama offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Major Applewhite could be the assistant coach Mack Brown picks to fill the vacancy on his staff created by the reassignment of running backs coach Ken Rucker, according to a source close to the Texas program. The source said Brown has talked to several people about the vacancy but that Applewhite, 29, is in the mix. The source was unclear about what role Applewhite would have on the Texas staff, considering Brown has been fiercely loyal to offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Greg Davis, who remains a mentor to Applewhite.

And within weeks of a possible bad start in 2008 for the Longhorns, they'll be calling for Applewhite to take over for Brown.

so Brown, who benched a better Applewhite for Chrissy Simms, and then had to insert Applewhite back into games to pull his chestnuts out of the fire more than once, thinks Applewhite would come back...to work under him. Wow, i would be surprised to see that happen. Im sure Major still has the tread marks from all the times Brown threw him under the bus.

Crimson has a point. Mack made a huge mistake and screwed Applewhite by starting Chris Simms, but hopefully Applewhite doesn't hold grudges after 5 years.

Long live Applewhite. Here's hoping that the Texas offense will escape the predictability and mundaneness of Greg "I cant abandon the script" Davis.

I think I had a major applewhite removed once. I felt better afterword anyway.

Considering how unproductive Alabama's offense was this past year, it might be the best move for both schools. Applewhite obviously wasn't ready to be an offensive coordinator, so running back coach at his alma mater might be the perfect fit. He definitely needs more seasoning

Now I am not a Major Applewhite defender, especially after he has just left my beloved Tide, but I've just got to correct you on something. Do you really think Alabama, home of the greatest traditional powerhouse, would let this guy come in and cut his teeth with our team? He had already been the OC at Rice, and actually had a top five scoring offense with them (42+ points a game), so I am pretty sure he is "ready" to be an offensive coordinator. I think it more so goes back to EastCoast's point, which is that Major Applewhite is highly revered amoung UT fans, and the writting is now on the wall for him to be the next HC of the Longhorns. The kid is super sharp, and will be a GREAT coach for many years to come.
