07:11 AM ET 09.29 | Many fans of the late Walter Payton were stunned by the depiction of the Bears Hall of Fame running back as a flawed human being in Jeff Pearlman's controversial book: "Sweetness: The Enigmatic Life of Walter Payton." Assertions that Payton abused drugs and was a self-indulgent womanizer with occasional suicidal tendencies sent shock waves through the sports world. Yet no one felt worse than his older brother, Eddie Payton, who has written his own book, "Walter & Me: Standing in the Shadow of Sweetness," published by Triumph Books to be released next week. "I mean, you're trying to make money off the dead, and I found that utterly disgusting. I guess for my own edification, I needed to try to set the record straight. I don't want to say that I was his wing man, but I was, so I know the good the bad and the ugly. It was no more and no less than what Joe Average does. To attack somebody whose claim to fame was that he did it the way it should be done, and respected the game and the fans who made him what he is... I had a real hard problem with that."

"...Assertions that Payton abused drugs and was a self-indulgent womanizer .."

Well Golly! That was two thirds of the male population in the 60s and 70s.

RIP Walter, they can all take Pot Shots, but they can't take those wonderful memories!!!

Let the past be the past. Why bring up the guy's alleged negatives when he can't even defend himself?

September 29, 2012  09:24 AM ET

A bit of irony in all of it really. One guy is "disgusted" that someone would write a book to make money off the dead, so he writes a book about the same guy. Who would read either book?

Yes. The sanctimony here is thick and criticisms of the Pearlman book amount to advertizing for why you should read Eddie's. Maybe there's some genuine feeling for Walter, but Eddie comes across as a sack.

Anything for a buck.

He could do a round of talk shows and accomplish his stated mission and reach more people. But then, there is no money to be had.

You think talk shows are going to have Eddie Payton on just to refute Pearlman's claims it'd be like promoting Pearlman's book for one and could you imagine every sibling of a great would be lining up to talk on Rikki or Ellen or Sally Jessy or ...

Maybe they hung out together. Ya think he may write a book about riding shotgun with a legend? That I would read.
