07:45 AM ET 09.29 | DePaul officials are in serious discussions with the United Center to move their men's basketball games downtown from the Allstate Arena, a source told the Tribune. DePaul annually plays about 16 home games in suburban Rosemont, where it has played for more than 30 years. The possible move, which would provide students a shorter trip to games from their Lincoln Park campus, could come as early as next season, according to the source.

It's a big deal because DePaul joined the Big East so they could bring good teams to Chicago and draw a crowd, and in turn use that to develop recruits right in the city. Like NYC, most of the talent from the city goes to college in the near midwestern region, not in the city itself. They are trying to build DePaul's brand as "Chicago's college basketball team". Unfortunately, All State Arena is far away and difficult to reach by public transportation. The United Center is by no means in the heart of the city, but it is a much easier trip and MUCH cooler place to watch basketball.
