NFL unlikely to return to LA before 2014

08:01 AM ET 09.29 | It could be years before the NFL agrees to allow franchises to move to the Los Angeles-Orange County market, according to former NFL and pro sports executives and consultants involved in previous NFL team relocations and stadium projects, even if the Los Angeles City Council approves the Anschutz Entertainment Group's plans for a $1.5 billion downtown stadium as expected Friday. While AEG and Los Angeles city officials insist they are closer to securing an NFL franchise than at any other point since the Rams and Raiders left the region in 1995, league officials continue to have major questions about the viability of both AEG's Farmers Field project and plans for an $800 million privately funded stadium in the City of Industry, the executives and consultants said in a series of interviews this week. "The NFL is not going to allow this to be done unless and until they're absolutely convinced it's going to be successful," said Marc Ganis, president of the Chicago-based SportsCorp Ltd., and a consultant on the Raiders' move to Oakland from Los Angeles. The uncertainty surrounding the sale of AEG by its parent company is just one in a series of significant obstacles the nation's second largest media market still must overcome before securing an NFL team, the sports executives and consultants said.

Yeah, the state is broke, but there is money there. Likeliest transplanted team is the Raiders. Can't imagine them not moving in fact. The revenues are just too great to ignore. And there is still an LA Raider fan base in the Big Ugly.

Teams that look like they could be relocated to LA include:
1) Raiders
2) Jaguars
3) Bills
4) Rams
5) Vikings
One of those will be in LA by the year 2017.
But LA is a two-time loser in NFL terms. There is no guarantee that a new team will do well there.

I don't understand the fevor to move a team to LA they had 2 and they moved out. Sure there are a lot of people there but how many of them play soccer ?

You have no reason to, but take it from me - the Bills are either staying put, or moving 90 minutes north to Toronto. They just extended the one game a year deal until 2017, and Cuomo has indicated he's willing to chip in to revamp the Ralph if the Bills commit long-term to a lease. My guess is either your first, second or fourth choice cities are going to lose their team to LA.

Ralph Wilson has been an obstructionist small market owner who has tried to block every initiative the NFL has made over the last few years. He's the poster child of the type of owner Jerry Jones and Daniel Snyder complain about when revenue sharing comes up. They can't do anything about him, he's an original AFL owner and in the HOF, but his family is selling the team as soon as he's gone. My guess is that all the deals currently in place for the Bills will not be assumed by the new owner, and that the NFL wants to replace their small market problem child with a large market team in LA.
