NASCAR considering more Friday qualifying

09:14 AM ET 09.29 | As it does annually, NASCAR is contemplating competition changes that could include moving some Sprint Cup Series qualifying sessions to Friday afternoons in 2013 and tweaking the current testing policy. The possible changes were a hot topic in the Dover International Speedway garage area, where drivers and teams gave their input about more race weekend schedules that would feature Friday qualifying and a practice session on Saturday. By completing qualifying on Fridays, teams will have more time to work on the race setup on Saturdays. It also gives race promoters a Saturday ticket that will feature a couple hours of significant Cup practice and more time in the garage for driver and fan interaction instead of more than a couple of qualifying laps. NASCAR is expected to formally announce several competition changes for the 2013 season sometime in October.

The reason is they cannot get a word in edge-wise because of all the college football -- sponsor $$ is the key to this. They'll probably run quals later in the afternoon ... just sayin'

For the first time since 2008, NASCAR will allow Sprint Cup organizations to test independently at tracks that host events in NASCAR's top three touring series.

This is a money maker for the tracks it adds one more day to the race weekend, Now your ticket gets you in on Friday or Saturday you can watch practice -qualifing -and the Nationwide race .......going to Friday qualifying for a sunday race means now you would have to buy another ticket for fridays events.......just another way to get more $$$$$$$$$$

Have you heard anything about this particular point? I have a hard time believing that that is their motivation. NASCAR fans are already staying home because of the high costs involved in going to the events and I just can't see the track owners shooting themselves in the foot trying to squeeze more money from an already broke fan base.

That would be, in a word, AWESOME!
That's one of the things I like about the NHRA, there is no guaranteed spot in the field. A couple of years ago John Force himself failed to qualify for an event.
Imagine, having to actually EARN your way into the field.....now THAT'S racing!!!!!!!!!

How about same day qualifying like in Nationwide and Trucks. They qualify the cars then line them up for the race, no adjustments, tire changes, or fuel added, you have to start the car like it is after your qualifying lap. (adjusted for applicable penalties.)

testing sessions are usually either closed to the public or open & free.. it's not for lets say a thursday before a race, it's whenever the teams want to go.. either way, with the new car next year they're going to need all the testing they can get

I have an idea for 'change'. Dump this chase nonsense. Back to racing the way it should be... the Champion at the end of the year is the one who prevailed at the end of the entire year - not the last 10 races. Enough of these faux champions.
